Why doesn't Dell sell separate graphics cards for the Aurora?

I'm looking to replace the graphics card in my Aurora R10 with a RX 6800 XT. However, NONE of the cards on the market can fit into the case (without removing the front fan) EXCEPT the Dell OEM versions. However, even though I'm an Alienware customer who paid a lot of money for a system, it is NOTORIOUSLY reluctant to accept or fit 3rd party upgrades. Dell wont sell it to me separately even though its the only 6800XT on the market that fits into the Aurora R10. This PC could have been a good buy if Dell would not think of 1000 tiny little things it can put into it that make it miserable.

from Chris again regarding this question: Most likely a supply issue.

I take it to mean if there is enough supply from gpu maker to Dell, you can buy the oem gpu as a retail gpu on Dell external site.  case closed.

Dell's primary business is selling computers . . . not computer parts. The RTX 3070 Founders Edition will fit in your Aurora R10 without any chassis modifications. The PSU, RAM, and cooling solution can also be replaced with 3rd party components.

You can always try Ebay. I have seen them sold as mostly pre-owned and on rare occasions as new. Expect them to be slightly above MSRP.  I found these two listings, although I would not drop that much money on a last generation GPU. I would put that towards a new system.

$700 AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB GPU Graphics Card GDDR6 Dell RWKN3 4x DisplayPort | eBay

$800 Dell Oem AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB GDDR6 Graphics Card | eBay

"Dell's primary business is selling computers . . . not computer parts. "

they are selling computer parts nonetheless and given their philosophy regarding general compability they might as well offer upgrades for all the GPUs related to the Aurora R1x series...

i mean they DO sell  seperate graphics cards, just not the 6800 xt

Yes, but their primary business is selling computers and accessories. So that has priority over parts they might sell, or not, as that is secondary.

Re: mean they DO sell  seperate graphics cards, just not the 6800 xt

not yet. Their main purpose is to make sure the newest hottest pc on their webpage has the gpu in stock so delivery of system is not delayed. Makes sense. Pc makes more profit revenue than gpu part. When the hot pc is getting slightly outdated when the next model is out, then yesterday’s best gpu may become available for parts. Therefore for best spec components such as top of line gpu or cryotech cooler or 1000/1350w psu etc, better get it when ordering complete system than latter asking them to sell parts. I can understand they are reluctant to serve old customer and their primary market is new customer buying new pc.

oh and as for "I can understand they are reluctant to serve old customer and their primary market is new customer buying new pc."

i can confirm as an old customer, given the experience i had with the Failienware product quality, i will (with the possible exception of upgrading to a 6800xt) never be a new customer of Dell, as long as the quality of the PCs is as bad and expensive as it is now.

Really the only positive thing about Dell Failienware is that the waranty service is fast if a piece of hardware dies within waranty. But there are other retailers who also offer good RMA service so...

My first option would be the HP Omen. Their Cryo-Chamber cooling tech is second to none in the boutique PC space. The Corsair Vengeance series is also nice using standard off the shelf parts like HP.

My biggest complaint with Alienware is not so much the plastic build or design aside from the proprietary parts. It's that you are still basically locked out from doing what would be considered basic upgrades without tripping the "fire alarm" inside the PC.

Be glad you can change to another graphics within the outside tolerances, a alienware R13 is not upgradedable with a a GPU, PSU, Dram or motherboard.

And I expect the R15 and R16 to have their share of limitations as well.

Agreed, while the R13 is under warranty it can be kept running, but after that if you have problems all you can do is scrap the few usable parts (cpu/ram/gpu/ssd, and even the gpu and ssd are special versions).  Any part dies, dell will not sell you a new one, and its not compatible with any industry standard parts.

That would depend on which Alienware model. I changed my Area-51 CPU, RAM, graphics card, case fans, added custom cables, and a custom cooling solution . . . no fire alarm tripped.

Origin PC is owned by Corsair

GPU and SSD are regular. They are OEM, but meet the applicable standards, I run the RTX 3080 I pulled from my R10 on a system I put together myself, without an issue.
