Aurora R8, doesn't boot after SK Hynix PC601 SSD firmware update

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help.

I'm booting in to Windows 11 from the NVMe drive. After looking in to the Dell support pages it suggested that the firmware needed to be updated so I installed and ran the following:

May 30, 2019 SK Hynix PC601 SSD firmware update 80002111, A00

However, I now boot the PC and it fails to boot in to Windows and goes to the recovery options like it isn't detecting any bootable drive. Upon boot, I have to hit F12, and manually select the NVMe drive from the list. Then it does boot in to Windows as expected.

I'm unable to change the boot order from the bios as it only lists windows boot manager.

Is anybody able to help figure out what might have gone wrong here, or how to fix it?

Thanks for the help.

After some further generally faffing the problem seems to be fixed. In case anybody else runs in this issue, I repaired the boot loader by opening command prompt as administrator and using the command "bcdboot c:\Windows" (Change depending on your drive letter) to add the link back to the boot loader.

Windows boot manager setting is corrupted after ssd update.  The manager is just an EFI link to lead to the bootable ssd after initial Windows install.
When the EFI link is properly set up, the discrete ssd disappears from bootable device list.  When the link is broken, the discrete ssd reappears but pc still goes to the link to look for boot device hence the error and the need to F12 and manually select the ssd.  Nothing wrong with the ssd just a bad link.

Try wipe the ssd and do a clean Windows 11 installation.  Wipe=remove all old partitions in ssd.  This will delete the old Windows boot manager in EFI boot partition and build a new proper EFI link  upon initial run post install.

Another way to try is to reset bios to factory setting which hopefully removes Windows boot mgr from bios>boot device, then F12 choose ssd.  After it boots into windows try restart and see if that would build a new Windows boot mgr that is correct.

Hi,

Thanks for your help. I attempted resetting my BIOS but no joy unfortunately.

The system was working perfectly before the firmware update. So somehow the update has corrupted the link. Its quite annoying that this site flagged it as a critical update and now my only choice seems to be to wipe my PC.
