Aurora R10 (Ryzen 9) Rebuild

Everyone was very helpful in my last thread regarding the blink code for my Aurora R10 (Ryzen) PC.

https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/alienware-desktops/aurora-10-bios-failure-no-video/6529183ccb7d3532d8cb3754

I bought a compatible AM4 board, and just move everything into a new case.  It worked fine, but the only challenge I'm encountering is the water cooler.  It looks like the screw pattern for the water cooler is for an Intel board (LGA 1200) and is square.  The brackets for the AM4 are rectangular.

I'm thinking Dell may have engineered their board to so that the same cooler can be used on both the Intel and AMD versions.

I've searched and searched and was not able to find a kit with brackets that would allow me to install this LGA cooler.  The closest I could fine is below, but I don't think it will work.

Does anyone know of anything that would work?  I was thinking I could have one 3D printed so I can use the "stock" Dell cooler, but was hoping to find something that I could just order :)

Thanks!

Yes, in their infinite wisdom they decided to use the same LGA mounting studs regardless of AMD or Intel CPU.

On top of that, if I am not mistaken the studs are part of the case so a backplate will not work either since the studs are in the way.

There is no bracket to install an LGA cooler onto this contraption when using an AMD platform, and if you install the cooler using the provided LGA mounting hardware the cold plate will not be in the right position and you might have issues with the contact of the plate onto the CPU.

The best you can do is find an original OEM cooler for that case.

I see Dell cutting cost to use intel cooler for Ryzen.  AMD is always a minority model in the vast number of Dell desktop.  why bother the RnD investment to design a specific AMD cooler when the tooling cost does not justify a few models sold.  it makes business sense if not scientific or good engineering sense.

no you can not use the Dell Intel cooler on a non-Dell AMD motherboard.  just ditch the Dell cooler.  it is not good idea to use some strange hybrid adapter.

@redxps630 Yes but, there is no R&D needed if you stick to the standards. Especially on AM4 motherboards as retail boards come with 2 black plastic clips mounted to the motherboard that can be used to clip an AM4 cooler on to.

Or you can remove those 2 plastic clips and replace them with studs, with or without a new backplate, and use those to mount your cooler.

Here we have a motherboard with no back plate, 4 studs LGA spacing on an AM4 compatible case, and likely 1 cold plate design that had to be R&D to ensure proper contact on both Intel and AMD CPU's. And of course LGA mounting holes on an AM4 motherboard, just to ensure it's as least compatible with retail coolers as possible...

Even cutting the studs from the case will not help you, because the motherboard holes are LGA spaced...

Not sure what components you are running, but if you have gone to the effort to move to a new case, hopefully the case is sufficiently large that your can upgrade to a 240mm or 360mm AIO CPU cooler.
