Dell R730 Memory Upgrade 16x 32GB RDimm
Hi Everybody,
We have a customer with an Dell R730. He wants to upgrade his server with those Dimms:
4x - M393A4K40BB1-CRC, Samsung (32GB) 2Rx4 PC4-19200T-R (DDR4-2400) Registered CAS-17
4x - HYM805351-B21-HY, Hypertec (32GB) 2Rx4 PC4-2400T-0 / 1,2V ECC DDR4 SDRAM - DIMM 2400 MHz (PC4-19200)
4x - HMA84GR7MFR4N-TF, SK Hynix (32GB) 2Rx4 PC4-17000P-R (DDR4-2133) Registered CAS-15
4x - HMA84GR7AFR4N-UH, SK Hynix (32GB) 2Rx4 PC4-19200T-R (DDR4-2400) Registered CAS-17
Actually everything looks good, only the Dimms B3 and B7 are not visible. Not sure if we have an Dimm/Mainboard contact problem or if this config will never work with those 512GB RDimms. A German R730 Manual says it is ok to use them, an english manual requires LRDimms.
Any idea?

KasperEL,
It should be fine to do so, as long as the Rdimms are single or dual rank, as there isn't any listed 32gb rdimms that are quad, as well as you can't have 3 quads per dimm channel. So what you would need is something like part number CPC7G, which is listed as supported on the R730, and populate them in A1-8 and B1-8.
Let me know if this helps.

Hey there,
looks interesting though.
What we see is that one from the Hynix (HMA84GR7AFR4N-UH) and one from the Hypertec modules is not detected. So it seems not to be related to one specific DIMM.
But, first things first.
The R730 supports 24 x DDR4 RDIMM and LRDIMM up to 1536 GB.
It is using the following memory technologies:
DIMM Type: RDIMM; LRDIMM
Transfer Speed: 2400 MT/s; 2133 MT/s; 1866 MT/s
Voltage: 1.2V (DDR4)
RDIMMs are supported, don't know why the manual shows different.
Here is something to test.
You split the modules into groups of two DIMMs per vendor per channel.
Give it a try and place all 4 Hypertec and all 4 Hynix in one channel in order to see if the situation changes or if the behavior persists.
This may also show if it is somehow a problem with contact and/or the slots.
If the issue moves with the DIMMs, you may consider replacing them - maybe they are faulty.
And finally, let me know how it went.
Best regards,
Stefan

@DELL-Stefan R Hi Stefan, let see if this thread is still alive. I've also seen in the 730 manual that the config with 16 x 32 GB ram modules only is listed as LRDIMM, and no mention og RDIMM, but you say its still possible to use 16x32gb RDIMM?
