R720 CPU Upgrade resulting in memory error

Hello,

I'm having a strange issue here...I was thinking maybe you can help?

As planned, I upgraded my CPU's from 2640's to 2650 v2 and by doing this, I have an error showing up on POST...

ERROR: Memory initialization warning detected.

MEMBIST Memory test failure DIMM A2

(See attached)

It then completely destroys the Windows installation...

I did this troubleshooting already:

Updated BIOS (2.7)

Updates iDrac

Swapped memory modules

Swapped CPU's

Also:

The error always comes on the same memory slot

The error disappears as soon I reinstall the 2640's

It would be wonderful if you could take some time to help me with that...

Xtof

Hello Christophe,

Your troubleshooting seems to indicate it is a bad DIMMA2 slot since the error is always on that slot but the fact that the error goes away when reinstalling the 2640 may indicate a bad 2650.

Check your CPU and DIMM sockets for any damage like bent pins.

Can you try the 2650, one at a time in CPU 1 socket, Populate the A1, A2, A3, A4 and check result.

If you have enough DIMMs then swap out A1, A2, A3, A4 with others and check results.

Then swap out to the other 2650 in CPU 1 , A1, A2, A3, A4 populated. Check results.

If you have enough DIMMs then swap out A1, A2, A3, A4 with others and check results.

Try running diagnostics in each configuration

Boot to F11 on Dell Splash screen, selecting Boot Manager -> System Utilities -> Launch Dell Diagnostics. Note any messages and continue testing.

Also can you verify the 2640's work in the same test configuration with single CPU1 and A1, A2, A3, A4 populated.

Hello Charles,

Thank you so much for your reply!

I'll go through that protocol as soon as possible.

Regards,

Christophe
