XSP 15 9520 Second M2 WD Black SN850X Drive Not Showing Up
XPS 15 9520
Hello, I bought a WD - BLACK SN850X 4TB Internal SSD PCIe Gen 4 x4 M.2 2280 NVMe to put into my second M.2 slot of my XPS 9520.
I physically installed it without issue, however it does not show up in the BIOS or in windows device manager. I have reseated it twice, hoping that it was just a bad connection, but it still is not showing up.
Is this drive not supported or incompatible? What can I do to fix this?
I only have a few days left to return it if it is not possible to get working.
Other thing I tried:
- Disable RAID: I wanted to attempt to do this except that it would require wiping my existing drive due to bitlocker so that is not really an option for me right now. (I did try it but ya it bluescreens and then when switching back to RAID I had to use my bitlocker recovery key...)
I can try to reseat it more but after a certain point it seems like something else is the issue...

To disable RAID without reinstalling Windows, try these steps:

@Chino de Oro Thank you for the info I will look into that. Do you think switching to AHCI/NVME will help with the drive not even showing up in the BIOS? I feel like I would have expected it to show up even if it was in the incorrect usage mode.

Very likely that it will show up. Have you try to setup from Settings=> System=> Storage=> Advanced storage settings=> Storage spaces=> add new storage pool.

@Chino de Oro Thank you for the tip on disabling RAID. I was able to switch to AHCI/NVME and cleanly boot.
However, the SSD is still not showing up in my BIOS or in windows :(

Does the new drive show up in the first M.2 slot (the one containing the boot drive)? And does the original drive show up if mounted in the second M.2 slot?

@ejn63
Wow I was going to test that but when I went to remove the new SSD, the screw hole itself popped off with the screw. Looks like it was not glued on very well…
Not sure what to do now I can’t even put the ssd back in any more….
Does anyone know the name of the screw hole part so I can order a replacement and try to reglue it back in place?

For workaround fix, just use double sided adhesive tape to place underneath the SSD and on top of the broken board.
For testing as suggested by ejn63, install the boot drive to the second M.2 slot to see if it will boot.
