XPS Laptops, how do I turn off Smart charging?

XPS 15 9530

XPS 15 9530

According to this support article at Microsoft, "Because each device manufacturer implements Smart charging in slightly ways, visit your device manufacturer’s website to learn how to turn it off for your device".

But I can't find the info anywhere on Dell:s homepage or community support pages. Help?

💡 THE SOLUTION 💡

After contacting Dell Support, here's what worked for me to turn off Smart Charging:

  1. Shut down the laptop completely.
  2. Turn it back on and press the F2 key (or Fn + F2) as soon as the keyboard lights flash. This takes you into the BIOS setup.
  3. Once in the BIOS, go to the Power tab.
  4. Find Battery Configuration and change the setting to Standard mode to disable Smart Charging.
  5. Save and exit.

Hope this helps anyone facing the same issue!

On selected laptop models, Dell Power Manager was used and provided users options to manage battery charging method.

To turn off Smart charging in Microsoft, you can follow these steps:

Click on the Start button and open the "Settings" app.
In the Settings window, select the "System" option.
From the left sidebar, select "Power & sleep".
In the Power & sleep settings, scroll down and click on the "Additional power settings" link.
This will open the Power Options panel. Look for the currently selected power plan (usually "Balanced").
Click on "Change plan settings" next to the selected power plan.
On the next screen, click on "Change advanced power settings".
In the Advanced settings tab, scroll down and expand the "Battery" category.
Look for an option related to "Smart charging". Depending on your system, it may be called "Conservation mode" or something similar.
Click on the option, and select either "Off" or "Disabled" from the drop-down menu.
Finally, click "Apply" and "OK" to save the changes.
Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
Once these steps are completed, Smart charging should be turned off on your Microsoft device.

@gbert27455 Unfortunately, there isn't any such option under Battery. There is (loosely translated from German):

  • - "Energy saving mode", which only allows me to change when this energy saving mode occurs (by battery percentage) - nothing else.
  • - Battery usage, showing a graph. No settings available there either.

I'm using Windows 11 Home, 23H2, build 22631.3447 with Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22688.1000.0.

Any other ideas on how to actually control this? As it is now, I basically bought a new laptop with randomly reduced battery capacity 😓

@Ironmaidenmania i didn't check in detail but it is not meaning even if win11 shows the heart symbol as the smart charging is enabled, in case you choose "Standard" on Uefi/or Dell Power Manager.

But in case you choose "Adaptive", then Win11 shows also the same heart symbol. But in this moment it is working as Win11 Smart charging. Even though Win11 shows as 100% but the actual Wh energy (say SOC) is lower than designed 100% in most circumstances.

This would be the similar or the same as "Primarily AC adapter" on Uefi/dell P.M. but sometimes laptop is to be charged as a real soc100% due to the flimsy logic.

In short, if you choose from Uefi as "Standard", the battery will be charged SOC100%. Don't mind about the heart symbol.

Very flimsy design but it is.

I do only "Custom" as around max 80%, that is the sweet spot for keeping better SOH during its lifespan, and can be switched as Standard to have a real soc100%. It is simple.

In my opinion, win11 smart logic and dell's Adaptive logic both are the poor option, should be very retarded flimsy logic.
