XPS 17 9720, severe performance issue after updating Bios 1.32
Well this machine has become unbearable and unusable for my Audio Work! I'll have to sell it if there's no solution.
I use to get cinebench r23 scores of around 15000 on the multicore, now it's only about 8000!
I have lots of audio dropouts/glitches and it's throttling and causing glitching when video editing! Fans spin up erratically and the cpu temperature often hits 100 under load and throttles! Running the HW diagnostic says everything is fine!
I've tried everything in my power, restored factory OS, repasted the CPU, cleaned the fans etc.... even bought a new battery!
any possible solutions? BIOS downgrade is blocked! even BIOS recovery doesn't work! It's so frustrating.
I will never buy a DELL laptop again! It's so infuriating and I'm not alone here!
PLEASE DELL provide a safe way to rollback the BIOS!

I finally managed to fix this! it was the vapor chamber heatsink! the machine was overheating... replaced the vapor chamber from one i bought off ebay, runs normal now! I suspected the issue by running the cinebench benchmark with the bottom cover open and running my finger along the heatsink, all the heat was centered over the CPU area and the fans were blowing cold air where it should be warm or hot! something failed in the chamber! If your having similiar issues try that, it could be a cooling issue and it has been reported before on this model! FYI!
still not happy with Dell though and their customer support service! shockingly bad and just not very supportive as I would hope!

Same thing exact thing happened to my xps 9720 and its completely ruined my work week. I cant video edit or even use Word or Outlook without it slowing down to where its unusable. Lost audio almost completely now and cqnt even reset the PC. Really need help. I have a core i7, Nvidia rtx 3050 and 64gb of RAM.

this is the story with me too. i have tried to repaste it, no difference, when i check the cooling finns and the output air it is "cool" but the center of the cooling copper bar is super hot. and i get Throttling waring in Core Temp monitoring software, hovering around 80 degree all the time, and the fans spinning mad from just 20% load and 15W of power draw... i have ordered heatpipe on Aliexpress but i risk it is a used unit that is faulty too...
i get about 2357 points in chinebench r20...
