XPS 17 9720, hard drive

I have an XPS 17 9720 laptop that was working fine and then all of a sudden screen went blank. I tried to restart it and then when that didn’t work, I Shut it off and turn it back on. When I did, I got an error code that said that the hard drive was not installed. What happened because now all of a sudden I have to send my computer into Dell to have them change out my hard drive and I won’t get it back for 10 to 15 days. Is there any way to fix this without sending it in for a new hard drive? I’ve only had this computer for two years so why did the hard drive all of a sudden die? Can anyone offer any solutions? Thank you for your time.

They should be willing to ship you a drive, which is fairly easy to replace (assuming the system is under warranty).  If it's not, any M.2 2280 NVMe SSD can be used as a replacment.

If you don't have a warranty you may wish to shut down, unplug the system and remove the base cover.  Hold the power button for 30 sec and remove and reinstall the drive.  If that doesn't get it going, you will need to replace it.
