Verify that the AC adapter is recognized (F2 at powerup to check) and that it attempts to charge the battery. If it doesn't, you have an adapter or mainboard problem.
If the adapter is recognized, that leaves the battery -- and being about five years old, it's not unexpected that it needs to be replaced.
