XPS 16 9640 coil whine when connected to dock WD22TB4
XPS 16 9640
While the XPS 16 9640 is connected to a WD22TB4 dock the laptop is emitting significant coil whine sounds. I have found an official known issure where the WD22TB4 emits such noise. But I do not understand why also the laptop is emitting this nois. The nois disappears if a power adapter is connected to the laptop before the dock is connected. Are there any changes to fix this with a future firmware update. The sound makes me crasy. We have more than one dock and also more than one XPS 16 9640. All the same problem. Many thanks for your help!

There is a firmware update for the WD22TB4. If you don't have this give it a try.
Support for Dell Thunderbolt Dock – WD22TB4 | Drivers & Downloads | Dell US
FWIW I'm using a WD22TB4 dock with an Inspiron 16 5630 and no noise.

Hello, unfortunately no! It is really frustrating. We have bought some Dell XPS 16 9640 laptops. Each for over 4000EUR. And they are just not usable in a silent office environment while the laptop is powered by a USB-C/TB dock. The only solution so far is to connect the laptop to a separate power supply before the dock is connected. Than the laptop is powered by the power supply and the coil whine nearly disappears.
I remember, some years ago, as the XPS15 9540 has the same troubles while connected to the power supply. There was an BIOS update which reduces the coil whine. I am not sure if this would also be possible for the new XPS 16 9640. But I am afread, it is just a faulty construction.
Regards,
Thomas.

- ram 64 GB
- intel core ultra 9
- 2 Tera Hard disk
- Nvida RTX 9060
It may be the solutioin could be to use another docking station.. there is anoteher model that is compatible with the XPS 16..
thanks

I have an XPS 9640 (Intel Ultra 185H, 64GB RAM, 2TB, RTX 4070). The laptop occasionally has a coil whine all by itself (rarely, and not so loud), but when connected to a WD19 the coil whine from the laptop becomes unbearable over longer than 10 minutes. (WD19 is the older version of WD22TB4 - both of these docks are listed as compatible with this laptop, although, I have not tried the WD22TB4). Additionally, in my case, the docking station also supplies power to the laptop (I specifically chose the 180 variant, so my laptop can use only 1 connector), and I have not tried connecting the dedicated power cord to the laptop first (the power cord and dock being at different locations).
So both "supported" docking stations might do this. I have read over various forums, that this problem is not necessarily present for everybody. Might be a lottery of who gets better quality hardware (I do not know if the quality of the laptop or the docking is more lackluster in this issue).
I have heard, that maybe changing the VRM switching frequency might be a solution, but since this is a laptop, there is no setting for it in the UEFI. Maybe a BIOS update could resolve this issue, but I am not sure (currently both the laptop BIOS and the dock firmware are at the latest versions).
( Also: Nvida RTX 9060? :P)

Same Situation here; XPS 16 9640 (Intel Ultra 185H, 64GB RAM, 2TB, RTX 4070).
The Device is chirping when connected to the Dock (WD22TB4, 180W).
When the device is under load (high load on CPU), the chirping becomes significantly quieter.

@vogeli additional Info:
when connecting a dedicated Powersupply before connecting the Dock, the chirping does not occur

I'm having the same issue (XPS 16 9640). Have someone tried other docking station none dell? Is this issue exists there as well?
