XPS 15 9530, smoked and stopped charging
XPS 15 9530
This laptop is about 18 months old. Warranty expired August 29, 2024. Today, while plugged into my dock with the back-left USB-C port, my external monitors turned off for about a minute. After that, I heard a quiet pop noise. Then a small amount of magic smoke came out near the area around the escape key. Then the external monitors resynced and starting working again, and a popup came up explaining that my laptop was no longer charging.
Laptop was connected to a Dell WD19S dock and a pair of 3.5mm earbuds.
Indeed, that USB-C port no longer charges. Is this uncommon? Are the latest models more reliable with USB-C power?

Probably no more or less reliable. Does the other Thunderbolt port charge the system?

Looks like a power MOSFET chip -- if you can find a shop capable of doing the replacement (and which has a donor board in hand to harvest the chip from), a repair may be less expensive than a mainboard replacement.
