XPS 15 9520 - Latest driver updates killed the sound

XPS 15 9520

XPS 15 9520

I updated my drivers to the latest (Windows Update) as I regularly do, without thinking too much, but now I have no sounds. Nothing plays on the speakers, in plugged-in headset nor in Airpods.

Nothing.

Other than "have you rebooted" or "try the sound issue utility", what should I do? It's one of those updates that caused the issue:

There are no issues under peripherals. I see nothing relevant under error logs.

Your system seems to have a recent Bios update and Realtek driver.  Beyond that, uninstalling the sound device in the Device Manager and removing its drivers may help.  I have, in the past, needed to take a sound system all the way back to the basic Windows audio drivers.

If you want a guess, I suppose the Realtek update may be the problem, but you can check the Device Manager and confirm which drivers the audio is currently using.  You do have other Realtek devices.

I did just that (uninstall Realtek drivers) soon after posting, and indeed the sound came back (generic drivers), and Windows later updated the drivers to 10.0.22621.1 from Microsoft themselves, and sound still works. I won't update the drivers to the one suggested by Dell, that seems to be the issue for me.
