XPS 15 9520 after bios update (today) right usbc port stopped working
This morning I got notification about recommended BIOS update... so I let it run...once the update completed my usb-c dock on right usbc port stopped working (when I connect it to left usb-c port it works). I tried even other dock .. same result, not working on a right usb-c.
Since I have my large monitor, mouse and kbd connected to it I would need to make it work again asap.
What I already tried:
- rebooting, power off/on : several times
- latest bios update reinstallation (completed OK)

Hi to all,
my right usb c works again... I have absolutely no idea what made it work again.
a) I never got any help from DELL support
b) yesterday my battery was completely empty so I left it charge overnight. When I opened the laptop today I got the message that Windows cannot boot.. so I selected advanced troubleshooting but the system did not detect where the problem is, so I just selected the option to try to boot again.. And it did without any problem. Then I was curious to check the right usb-c port... and it works again now.
Hope this helps at least one more owner of Dell XPS
just to let all of you that may experience similar problem

Are you connecting the power adapter to the laptop when you are running these BIOS updates?

Sure. Power adapter is connected at all times.

What BIOS/Firmware version did you have before?
What BIOS/Firmware version did you install/upgrade to?
Did you check that all the individual sub-components got updated successfully ? (including the Thunderbolt-Ports)
Personally, I would have installed it with only the supplied AC-Adapter connected directly the XPS-15 (9520).

current BIOS version 1.7.0 (no idea what previous version was)
all components updated successfully
yes, I am using original power supply, directly connected... but this really has nothing to do with the issue since I had no power glitch to blame (batt was at 100% so it should work even without power supply)

You would think that it wouldn't be a power issue, but yes even a 100% charged battery can cause issues for Dell BIOS updates. You've tried reinstalling the latest BIOS. Does downgrading the BIOS fix the issue?

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/xps-15-9520-laptop/drivers
From the Important Information for BIOS1.7.0, downgrade is restricted due to security concern.
So I think it's no go.

Hi mkzag
What is the usb-c dock you are using ? Is the one come within the box ?
Also, have you try this to recovery the BIOS ?

It is pity that DELL support does not react to such problems nor has a regular email/chat/whatever support channel but just offloads their job to the community

What's the model of dock station or adapter you connected at right-side port ?

I tried both the original small DELL port adapter as well as this one Type-C Multi-Port Adapter | USB-C Dongle - Satechi
Neither of those work. But both of them work on the left usb-c port(s).

USB C to USB A? Are you trying to use a dock or an adapter...? Did you run diagnostics like I asked...?
