XPS 15 9510, left side TB4/USB-C ports not working, charging works
XPS 15 9510
hi,
i have a Dell XPS 15 9510 and it's getting really annoying. first with the overheating issues and now the usb ports on the left side not working. it's really really frustrating, and i'm getting tired and sick of this laptop. this is the worst buying decision of my life. i tried a fresh windows install, installed all updates from Windows Update and Dell Update it didn't work. tried removing the thunderbolt drivers and reinstalling them but it didn't work. tried contacting Dell support for help but apparently they can't help me because my warranty has expired
i was hoping that someone had the same issue and found a solution to it, cause without those ports my laptop is pretty much useless. looking forward for your help, thank you.

Hi, I don't know why you want the Thunderbolt option, but this is my experience. I have a Dell dock, and I noticed that my two Thunderbolt ports on the left side do not work correctly (no video or data); it seems like they have contact issues. My solution: I disabled the Thunderbolt from the BIOS, and then my two USB-C ports started working without any problems. I still maintain the capabilities to charge, display video, and use Ethernet through my dock. If you need additional help, please let me know!

If the left-side Thunderbolt 4 (TB4)/USB-C ports on your Dell XPS 15 9510 are not working for data transfer or video output but are still charging devices, there are a few potential causes and troubleshooting steps you can try:
Check Device Manager: a. Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager." b. Expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section and look for any devices with a yellow triangle icon indicating a problem. c. If you find any problematic devices, right-click on them and choose "Uninstall device." Then, restart your computer to allow Windows to reinstall the drivers.
Update Thunderbolt 4 Drivers: a. Visit Dell's official support website and enter your laptop's service tag to access the latest Thunderbolt 4 drivers. b. Download and install the latest Thunderbolt drivers for your system.
Check Thunderbolt Security Settings: a. Access the BIOS settings by restarting your laptop and pressing the appropriate key (usually F2 or Del) during startup. b. Look for Thunderbolt security settings in the BIOS. c. Ensure that the security settings are configured correctly. Sometimes, overly restrictive settings can prevent certain devices from connecting.
Check for BIOS Updates: a. On the Dell support website, check for BIOS updates for your laptop model. b. If there is a BIOS update available, follow the instructions to install it. BIOS updates can often resolve hardware-related issues.
Check Cable and Peripheral Compatibility: Ensure that you're using a compatible Thunderbolt 4 cable and that the peripherals you're connecting are also Thunderbolt 4 compatible. Non-compatible cables or devices may not work properly.
Test with Different Devices: Try connecting different USB-C or Thunderbolt devices to the left-side ports to see if the issue is specific to certain devices or if it persists with all devices.
Try a Different USB-C Port: If your laptop has multiple USB-C/Thunderbolt ports on the left side, try connecting the problematic device to a different port to see if the issue is isolated to one specific port.
Reset Thunderbolt Controller: a. Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager." b. Expand the "System devices" section. c. Look for "Intel(R) Thunderbolt(TM) Controller" and right-click on it. d. Select "Uninstall device" and restart your computer. Windows will reinstall the Thunderbolt controller driver.
Contact Dell Support: If the issue persists after trying the above steps, and your laptop is still under warranty, it's advisable to contact Dell's customer support for further assistance. There may be a hardware-related issue that requires professional diagnosis and repair.
Keep in mind that troubleshooting USB-C and Thunderbolt issues can be complex, and it may require a combination of software and hardware solutions to resolve the problem.

Hello sir, and thanks for your help
Unfortunatly i have already tried everything you mentioned, but nothing changed, i can ocassionally get the highlighted port (see picture) to work somehow but it happens randomly and it's unreliable.
Also, i get this error when trying to install the Intel Thunderbolt Controller Application for an unknown reason.
I'm very frustrated and still desperatelylooking for a solution, cause my laptop is kinda useless at this point.
Thanks again!

@Ismael Cb This fixed the same problem on my xps 9500 I think maybe some bad firmware got pushed out. So happy I can charge and run an external monitor at the same time again.
