XPS 15 9500 won't charge - NOT a battery issue
My XPS 15 9500 is only 18 months old, but suddenly it won't charge. Here are the symptoms I observed and tests I tried:
- When the charger is plugged into the wall, the indicator light on the USB-C connector is on. When I connect it to the computer, the light goes off, and the computer shows no sign of recognizing that the charger is connected.
- I tested the charger, and it is good. I also tested the computer with another known-good charger, and the same thing happened, so the charger is not the problem.
- I disconnected the battery, connected the charger, and attempted to boot the computer. It did not turn on, so there is something wrong unrelated to the battery.
- I updated all drivers, and this did not solve the problem.
- I tried to do a BIOS test, but the battery ran out before it could complete.
- Everything else about the computer worked normally until it ran out of battery.
Now the battery is dead, and the computer will not turn on. I took it to a local repair shop, where they told me the logic board had failed. The cost to replace it is $1000, and they don't recommend doing so because it's not worth the money.
This computer is less than 2 years old and has suffered no physical damage! I don't want to spend $1000 to repair it, but I also don't want to spend $2000 to replace it.
Any other ideas on what might be wrong with it?

There is likely a fault with at least one of three items:
It's a process of elimination to figure out where the problem lies, or at least where it doesn't lie. Since your AC adapter is recognized and works on another Dell laptop, then the problem is likely your charging jack or charging circuit.
The jack is a relatively inexpensive item that is not difficult to replace for someone experienced in working on laptops.
If new jack doesn't solve the problem, then the fault is likely with the charging circuit on the motherboard, which would normally require replacement of the motherboard.
Also, it's worth trying a reset:

Unfortunately, that is likely the case. I wish I had better news for you.
If you live in the US, Parts-People (specialists in supplying genuine Dell parts and repairing Dell computers) offers a $100 Diagnosis and Repair service, whereby you pay just $100 + parts for repair, with free return shipping. If, after receiving their parts estimate, you decide against the repair, you pay just $30 for their diagnosis + return shipping cost.

Thanks for the clear advice. I did try the reset (forgot to mention that), and unfortunately it didn't work. Given that none of the 3 charging ports worked, would you say it's most likely a motherboard issue and not a port/jack issue?

Same issue, I bought my laptop in 2021 and it doesn't charge even though the charger charges my other laptop. All 3 USB-C ports don't charge. This is so annoying, Dell should cover the fix under warranty. This is totally unacceptable.

@filbert This is not a solution, we have already established that it's not the charger.
