XPS 15 9500 Power Issue

XPS 15 9500

XPS 15 9500

I've a very frustrating issue with my XPS 15.

It first started happening when my battery started dying.

The battery wasn't charging.

The solution at the time was to replace the battery.

I bought a Dell Battery from Dell and I replaced it.

For a short while then all was okay.

What's happening now is that if it goes to sleep or the lid is closed with application open, when I reopen the battery isn't charging. If I shut the laptop down and restart its not charging.

However if I power down the laptop for 30 seconds and let it shut down and pull the power out and restart the laptop without the power cable - it restarts and when I put the power in the battery is charging.

This problem doesn't make sense to me. Why does it charge under those circumstances but not on how it should normally behave.

It's like built in obsolescence. The laptop can function properly - why can't it charge.

Is there anything I can do?

(I think power issues with XPS 15 9500 are not uncommon  on other forums but I don't see any fixes for it) - just frustrated owners)

I don't have a solution for you, but I want to tell you that I have the exact same problem with my dell xps 15 9500.

The cycle of events is the same: the battery chargers, but then it will sleep/hibernate/lose power or not be used for a period and when I use it again it doesn't charge. The only thing that gets it to charge is to drain the battery to empty or to do a hard reset.

I have also had issues with Dell peripherals appearing to draw a lot of power and causing overheating.

I have updated bios, reinstalled Windows, checked the power plans, provided multiple battery and power reports, and finally Dell replaced the motherboard - but that didn't fix the problem.

Unfortunately Dell have refused to replace the machine and I am now stuck in a cycle of Dell support recommending the same unhelpful tests. It doesn't help that there is a different Dell advisor every time I speak to them.

I am wondering if there is a problem with the USB-C / powershare hardware. I am not sure if this is replaced during a motherboard replacement but if there is a separate component that can be replaced. The issues with drawing too much power while using a known-good Dell USB peripheral make me think it is a problem with the USB-C ports/hardware attached to these.
