XPS 14 9440 Camera Failure After BIOS Update — IVSC.sys BSOD

Hi all,

I’m experiencing a persistent camera failure on my Dell XPS 14 9440 that began shortly after a BIOS update. The issue affects both Windows and Linux and appears to be firmware-related.

Symptoms:

  • Camera light turns on briefly, then shuts off (Windows Hello)
  • Windows crashes with ATTEMPTED_SWITCH_FROM_DPC (0xB8) in IVSC.sys when camera is activated (Camera app, Studio Effects, Settings preview)
  • Device Manager shows Code 43 on Intel Imaging Signal Processor after failure with Windows Hello
  • Linux (Ubuntu Live) detects the camera (v4l2-ctl shows full device info), but guvcview fail to start the video stream
  • BIOS rollback to previous version did not resolve the issue
  • Clean Windows reinstall and driver reinstallation did not help

Diagnostics:

  • Minidump shows IVSC.sys DPC violation

Dell GHN (Get Help Now) chat technical support must verify the ownership and warranty status. Click the blue "Get Help Now" on the right to start a private live chat session. Share the private Service Tag with them.

What BIOS update did you install?

If 1.17.0, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to earlier versions.

* Boot into the BIOS Integrated Devices menu
* Look for Camera. If found change to Disable Camera. Then change to Enable Camera
* Exit the BIOS saving changes

In Windows 11 =
* Reinstall Intel Management Engine Components Installer 2514.7.16.0, A13
* Restart when done
* Reinstall Intel Integrated Sensor Solution Driver 3.10.100.7681, A01
* Restart when done
* Reinstall the Intel 2D Imaging MCU Visual Sensing Controller Driver for Camera 74.22000.1.11, A03
* Restart when done and retest

Post pictures of the errors.

Hello @DELL-ChrisM2,

I am on BIOS version 1.17.0. I downgraded to version 1.16.0, but the camera still did not work. The camera was also enabled in the BIOS, so that is not the issue. I have also tried reinstalling the drivers you listed without success either.

I am attaching pictures of the error in device manager, and the bug check analysis from the bluescreen.

I think you have already done everything listed here, but read through it just in case. The next step is for you to contact GHN (Get Help Now) chat technical support. Click the blue "Get Help Now" on the right to start a private live chat session. Share the private Service Tag, issue, and all of our troubleshooting with them.
