XPS 13 Plus 9320, screen replacement issues, no TPM Module or Hard Drive Detected

Hello

I currently have an XPS 13 Plus 9320 with an OLED screen.

The cable has become partially broken whereby I can now only open the laptop about 1 inch before the screen turns off.

The cable is very difficult to change due to the screen being glued to the lid so it seems the common route to fix this issue is to replace the screen unit.

I have done this and ordered a replacement however when fitted the laptop displays no TPM found and when it goes through the troubleshooting scan it finds no hard drive.

If I disconnect the new screen and reinstall the old one, the hard drive reappears and the system boots fine except for I can now not open the screen more than 1 inch again.

Can someone please explain how changing the screen can affect the hard drive and what I must do for it to accept the new screen please?

Thank you.

It won't unless there has been damage to the system board in the process of doing whatever it was you were doing.

Did you install an exact replacement screen AND replace the cable?

@ejn63 Nothing is wrong with the board because I can put the old screen back in and it works perfectly fine.

The new screen comes with the cables as they are glued together, it is the same model and spec.

Contact Dell GHN (Get Help Now) chat technical support Monday through Friday. Click the blue "Get Help Now" on the right to start a private live chat session. Share the private Service Tag with them so that they can verify the ownership and warranty status. This will also generate a unique Technical Support case for your unique Service Tag. If already out of warranty, click here for the Dell out of warranty offerings.

Was the replacement LCD purchased directly from Dell? If so, then I recommend contacting order support and let them know it seems to be DOA. Parts purchased directly from Dell should have a 1 year warranty. Im leaning on it to be DOA since reinstalling the original LCD brings back the hard drive and TPM functions. If it was purchased from a 3rd party, I'd try to get a 2nd replacement from them instead.

If you do manage to get a 2nd LCD and the same issue is happening, then you may actually be looking at a power rail failure of sorts. Due to the original LCD cable being damaged, there may be an issue once power is fully restored from a working LCD. Its a bit hard to say at this point, but it sounds like potential for a motherboard replacement. Or maybe a classic hard reset will clear the TPM and hard drive errors:

  1. Disconnect any external devices including the AC adapter and disconnect the battery cable if able.
  2. Hold the power button down for 10 seconds
  3. Reseat the battery cable if disconnected
  4. Plug only the AC adapter back into the laptop
  5. Attempt to power on the system

I think Dell use an authentification in a card inside the screen to detect an official or non official screen.

Apple does, but unless this is a very new development, Dell never has.

it would be nice to know for sure, i still have an otherwise very nice laptop sat here bricked due to a broken screen.

i wont be recommending any dell xps machines in the future if this has been purposefully built into the design as it makes me wonder what else they have done

I ended up with 2 motherboards, 2 screens, 2 keyboards, but zero working computers :) The price of a replacement screen at Dell is approximately €500 for this model.

@DELL-ChrisM2 Does this mean that some models are locked and that it is not possible to change the screen?

The way I am reading that data =

If your system shipped from Dell with a panel stating "Secure Version", you must buy the same "Secure Version" panel.

If your system shipped from Dell with a panel not stating "Secure Version", you should not buy a "Secure Version" panel.

@DELL-ChrisM2 I will be able to keep all these pieces and use them to make a wedge for my wardrobe. I don't understand why it's not possible to get a clear answer and why they beat around the bush.
