XPS 13 9310 Volans Docking Station Display Issues
XPS 13 9310
Hi Guys,
Looking for resolution the 3 issues I have been facing recently. Appreciate any inputs.
- The resolution on one of the display monitors is recommended 3840x2160 - however can't change it to higher than 2560x1440 (Snapshot attached)
- The rendering on both the display monitors has a lag.
- Often when I am on Google meet calls - both the display monitors freeze / go black - all the windows, meet me calls are still active but on the main laptop i.e. disconnects entirely from the displays & audio / mic via the docking the station.
Configuration :
- Dell XPS 13 9310 connected via USB C to Volans VL-UCTDMD Docking Station.
- The Docking Station is connected to
- 2 Philip PHL 328E1 Monitors
- Jabra Speak 510 USB Hub for Audio & Mic.
- Internet via Ethernet
- Wireless Keyboard & Mouse
Snapshot of the configuration
I was suggested to try the below 2 configurations by the Community Manager. The test results are stated alongside.
1st test configuration = PASS
* The provided AC power cable should be connected to the XPS 13 9310 left side TB4/USB-C port
* The XPS 13 9310 lid should be closed
* Remove the 3rd party dock from the troubleshooting
* Test each Philip PHL 328E1 monitor by itself on the XPS 13 9310 right side TB4/USB-C port
- Does each Philip PHL 328E1 monitor by itself go to 3840x2160?
2nd test configuration = PASS
* The provided AC power cable should be connected to the XPS 13 9310 left side TB4/USB-C port
* The XPS 13 9310 lid should be closed
* Connect the 3rd party dock to the XPS 13 9310 right side TB4/USB-C port
* Connect ONE Philip PHL 328E1 to the dock
- Does it go to 3840x2160?
* Connect the second Philip PHL 328E1 to the dock
- Does it go to 3840x2160?
Can someone please suggest on the next step of diagnosis or resolution ?

Start with #1 -- for that resolution, you need a Thunderbolt dock -- a USB-C dock isn't going to handle the bandwidth the display needs. The performance issues may be partly bandwidth in nature, and partly due to the dock's design (contact the manufacturer for the latter issue).

Hi @ejn63 - thanks - will get my hands on a USB C Dock & re-test.

You need a Thunderbolt dock -- not USB-C (there's a big difference in bandwidth).

Hi @ejn63 - got it rewired on a WD22TB4 docking station. Got issue #1 addressed, but continuing to have issues #2 & #3.
Any suggestions?
