XPS 13 9305 — Terrible electronic shrieking/crackling sound upon boot-up, significantly reduced battery life — any advice?

Hello all,

I have recently been experiencing difficulties with my Dell XPS 9305 that I use for university. The problems are as follows:

- battery life is significantly reduced to about 1 hour on a full charge. Battery saver mode also used to kick in at 30% rather than 20%, but nowadays it doesn’t charge at all

- fans always run at max RPM, even when memory/CPU usage is at a minimum

- it makes an ungodly shrieking noise every time I boot it up after a shutdown (not after a restart) — video here https://youtu.be/_A7XSL_ByOc?si=6lMMkx_9rBFr5gWo

My laptop has become basically unusable and I very much need it to complete my assignments. Any advice on fixes?

thanks in advance

The system needs:

1.  A thorough internal cleaning, and replacement of the thermal pads.

2.  A new battery.

You likely also want to run the diagnostics (F12 at powerup to begin).

@ejn63 Thanks for your response. I thoroughly cleaned the system, replaced all the thermal pads and replaced the thermal paste on the heat sink, as well as replacing the battery. The battery issue seems to tentatively have been resolved, however I am still experiencing the terrible screeching sound upon boot. If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it

Hi! I had a similar issue with my laptop - luckily had repair services on it so I sent it in.

They replaced the motherboard and speakers, things working fine for now. Will probably have to take better care to not overheat the system as much...
