XPS 13 9305 charging issues
XPS 13 9305
So my daughter's laptop will no longer charge, or power on since the battery ran out of juice. The power adapter is fully operational, but when plugged in the BIOS rean no AC adapter installed. Of course it happens just a few months past the warranty. I opened a ticket with Dell who tried to convince me to buy a $100 program saying it was a software issue. I can't turn the bleeping thing on, how do they expect me to download and install software. Anyway, this seems to be a common issue across multiple Dell laptop platforms. I tried removing the battery and pressing the power button to purge any electrical residue. No love. I am not skilled at precision soldering so I am not confident in removing the charging circuit. Are there any other recommendations?

Try the other Thunderbolt port -- is the adapter recognized there or not?

There are two thunderbolt ports on the left and one USB-C port on the right. They all are capable of power delivery for charging. Test the AC adapter on each of those ports to see if any of them can provide power to turn on your laptop. If none of them work, consider to replace the AC adapter.

@Chino de Oro none of them work, I tried 3 different adapters. I did find that the USBC port on the right side caused the light of the OEM adapter to turn off.

@ejn63 there is no power transfer from either port on the left, I even tried the USBC on the right just in case. No power

Try another USB-C charger -- even a phone charger to see if you get any sign of life. If you do, replace the adapter.
If not, the mainboard isn't repairable -- you'll need to evaluate the cost of a replacement mainboard against the future lifespan of the system. The boards will run $350 and up before labor, more if you have an i7 CPU.

When you tested with 3 different AC adapters, were they all Dell OEM power adapters for your laptop?
If I understood correctly from your OP, the laptop was fully operational with battery power until the battery power ran out. Therefore, testing the original AC power adapter on all three ports can determine if the AC adapter is faulty. But, if you have tested with 3 different OEM compatible power adapters and all 3 resulting of no sign of life, the motherboard is faulty (dead).

@Chino de Oro only 1 was the Dell OEM supply. I tried all 3 on all 3 ports, nothing. I tried all 3 on a different laptop and everything was fine. I can't think of anything other than the charging circuit or the motherboard, either of which is going to end up with me replacing the motherboard of a 2 year old computer at an astronomical cost.

@ejn63 I got no power from any adapter with any port. Dell is trying to get to purchase software that I can't install since there is no turning on of the system.
