XPS 13 7390 2-in-1, battery magnet/metal bar

Hello,

I recently bought a new battery for my XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 but it does not appear to work or even be detected by the laptop. I believe the issue is that I am missing the metal bar that has to be put in the bottom hole (I do have the magnet that goes in the top one). I would like to know how/where I could obtain one of these as they do not seem available for sale on Dell's website?

The metal bar and magnet work together to pull the system closed and keep it closed.  The only contact between the battery and the system board is through the battery cable.  Make sure the connector is firmly seated to the mainboard.  If it is, since the battery has a warranty from Dell, if it's not detected, have it replaced.  If it's defective, the replacement will work.

If the issue is with the power circuit, the mainboard will need to be replaced.  That much swelling can easily have damaged traces on the system board and be the cause of the no-battery condition.  The presence or absence of the magnet won't make any difference to the battery detection.

If you're still convinced the magnet needs to be there, you can buy replacement magnets from Amazon.

Example:

The battery simply plugs into the system board -- there is no magnet involved at all.  It's not clear what part you're looking for, but it would not have anything to do with the battery being detected or not.

What was the issue that led to the need to replace the battery?

Dell part NRTXJ magnet is not for sale. There is not a part number for the metal bar. The online XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 Service Manual instructions page 15 state that you would remove the magnet and the metal bar from the old battery for use with the replacement battery.

This is exactly why I am asking: I know it's supposed to come from the old battery but I have lost this part so I cannot use it.

As I have said and you confirmed, it's not on sale on the website, which I why I am asking where/how to obtain one... I just paid 150€ for a replacement battery that I cannot use at this point

I am referring to the part circled in red here.

The previous battery still worked but was considerably swollen so I took it out a while ago and it appears that this small metal bit was lost in the process.

The function of that magnet is to close the lid when it has nearly reached the touchpad.  It does not have anything to do with the function of the battery itself.

Is the replacement battery OEM or third party?

How bad was the swelling on the original battery?

It sounds like either the new battery is faulty or incompatible, or that there is damage to the system board that resulted from the swelling -- but the presence or absence of the magnet has nothing to do with the system recognizing or failing to recognize the battery.

where/how to obtain one?
You cannot. Even if still inside warranty (your XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 warranty expired February 2021), Dell support cannot get the part.

So what are my options?!

Am I suppose to just run the laptop on sector forever?

What can I even do with the battery that I just bought? It was $150 ffs

Thank you, that's the information I needed.
I will dismantle the laptop again and check if there could be any issue with the connector/board (though anything obvious is probably something I'd have noticed while I was looking for the issue, so I'll likely have to go through your next steps of new battery then board).

Thanks for the info!

The documentation refers to a magnet (top hole; in place) and a metal bar (bottom hole; it is the missing piece). Does your statement "It does not have anything to do with the function of the battery itself" apply to the metal bar as well?

"Is the replacement battery OEM or third party? "

I ordered it on Dell website so it should be OEM.

"How bad was the swelling on the original battery?"

Pretty bad, you could see a bump on the key space/touchpad. Everything looked normal after I removed it but you may be right about resulting damage - I cannot assess that. The laptop starts only on sector and acts as if there was no battery inside at this point.
