Windows 11 22H2 and XPS 13 9305

XPS 13 9305

XPS 13 9305

I have 2 computers that were upgraded to Windows 11 22H2 with no difficulty (Including a Dell Inspiron 13 7373).

The less than 1 year old XPS 9305 has not been offered the Windows 11 update to 22H2 in "Windows Update'.

In addition, if I attempt to install 22H2 using the iso from Windows Update Assistant I am only offered a clean install as the "Save files and applications" is grayed out. I do not want to do a clean install on my laptop.

2 Questions!

Are there known issues with 22H2 and XPS 13 9305?

Why am I only offered clean install on the Update Assistant created iso?

Thanks

Still no upgrade to 22H2 offered.

The solution is to create a backup of the XPS using Macrium Relfect.

Take that backup to another computer running Hyper-v and using Macrium ViBoot create a Virtual machine from the XPS backup. Download and install the 22H2 ISO from Microsoft. onto the Virtual machine. You will be offered the ability now to "Keep personal files and applications".

Backup the Virtual machine with ViBoot. Copy the backup to the XPS machine (to non-OS disk) Run Macrium relfect to restore the OS drive from the ViBoot copy.

the XPS will boot into the new OS (22H2) with files and applications preserved.

Doubt the problems were related to software. Suspect there is some block from hardwared devices or the bios restricting the direct upgrade. Nevertheless, all is working fine here.

Wish Dell could explain this!

I would advise you to hold off on the 22H2 update. 21H2 is supported well into next year, just read through the XPS forums to see all the issues 22H2 is causing.

For the number of XPS laptops out there I'm not seeing that many issues.

I'm willing to hold off a few months, but I prefer 22H2 over 21H2 on my other machines.

I use Macrium so I can reinstall with backups if it fails.

I tried to install 22H2 using the Windows Installation Assistant and the Windows 11 iso, but when I run setup the option to "keep files and applications" is greyed out, don't know if its because I upgraded the original Windows 11 Home to Pro 3 months ago.

Any explanation for why only a clean install is offered?

You have to run setup.exe from inside Windows (ensuring you're using a properly created Windows install USB).

I Ran both a USB install and an ISO virtual CD from Within Windows 21H2. Both have greyed out "keep files and applications" (And yes I am choosing the correct language US English)

I notice in looking at past post on "eleven forum"  this happened with a Windows 10 "Creators Addition" upgrade and ultimately required a modification of the iso to install as an upgrade not a clean install..

Okay so if you have properly created a Windows Installation USB using the Media Creation Tool then you need to have the USB plugged into the computer, booted into your current Windows setup. Access the USB through file explorer and then open setup.exe (send screenshots so we can see what is actually happening on the system).

I could probably muddle through this solution. However I've got better things to do with my time. I would think that deal could get this fixed somehow as there are a lot of XPS laptops.
