WD19TB docking station power/connection issue with XPS13 9300

Hello,

I checked both the docking station and XPS13 have the latest firmware/drivers.

The WD19TB has been acting strangely since I got it about 3 years ago but now the situation has become unbearable and I'm thinking to dump Dell altogether and go back to Lenovo but I'll give Dell one more chance.

The issue is that the docking station tries to connect/power on when I connect it to the laptop. I hear multiple sounds like USB is connecting but the light on the docking station power button and on the connector to the PC comes on, goes off multiple times end result being that the LED on the 180W AC adapter turns off (LED is on the adapter itself, not on the connector that plugs into the docking station).

What is causing this issue and how to solve it? Is it fixable or should I dump this system and buy Lenovo instead?

PS: I disabled C-state in BIOS and turned some sleep modes off. Is this an issue the PC or the docking station?

It sounds like you’re experiencing some issues with your Dell WD19TB docking station and your XPS 13 9300. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

Update Drivers and Firmware: Ensure that both your docking station and laptop have the latest drivers and firmware installed. You can find these on the Dell Support website1.
Check Connections: Make sure all cables are securely connected. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause power or connectivity issues.
Power Delivery: Verify that the docking station is receiving adequate power. The WD19TB requires a 180W power adapter to function correctly1.
Thunderbolt Settings: Ensure that Thunderbolt is enabled in your BIOS settings. You can access the BIOS by pressing F2 during startup. Look for Thunderbolt settings and make sure they are configured correctly1.
Reset Docking Station: Try resetting the docking station by unplugging it from the power source and your laptop, waiting for about 30 seconds, and then reconnecting everything.
Test with Another Device: If possible, test the docking station with another compatible device to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is with the docking station or the laptop.

Thanks for the reply. I'll double check the BIOS setting when I boot the laptop next time. Everything else (the drivers, connectors, 180W power adapter) is good, I have disconnected the power adapter and the laptop from the docking station perhaps 300 times. Unfortunately I don't have another device with Thunderbolt connector.

A little additional information: If I leave the laptop connected to the dock overnight, the LED on the power adapter is off in the morning and if I disconnect the laptop from the dock at night, the power adapter LED is on on the morning. In both cases I need to connect and disconnect the cables several times to the the system up and running. The LEDs on the dock power button and the connector to the laptop turn on and off several times. I can also hear chime from the dock indicating it is trying to connect. The LED on the power adapter (body) seems to change intensity a bit during those attempts and many times it turns off forcing me to disconnect the adapter from the mains source to proceed.

@JS-ATL

performed a hard reset on a docking station, but I can guide you through the process. Have you tried the steps I mentioned earlier to reset your Dell WD19TB docking station? If not, here’s a quick recap:

  1. Disconnect the Dock: Unplug the USB-C cable from your laptop.
  2. Unplug the Power: Disconnect the AC power adapter from the docking station.
  3. Drain Residual Power: Press and hold the power button on the dock for at least 30 seconds to discharge any remaining power.
  4. Reconnect Power: Plug the AC power adapter back into the docking station.
  5. Reconnect to Laptop: Finally, reconnect the USB-C cable to your laptop.

Hi and thanks again for the advice. I tried everything but nothing helped; I went with an Anker 553 hub. Much simpler than the WD19TB and works better than the Dell ever did. Much much cheaper too, I should have never bought the Dell. I'll be back on the forum when I have issues with my XPS. Thanks again.
