USB-C power fault

XPS 15 9570

XPS 15 9570

I noticed my iPhone is plugged into the USB-C port Windows reports the USB power is inadequate.

This suggests that while I can operate the machine with a 65W USB-C PSU the PD for a 10W phone charger is inadequate.

Use the AC adapter for the notebook directly with the phone -- the latest iPhone model (the 16 Pro Max) draws 45 W of power when charging at full speed.

The days of charging a smartphone with a 5-10W adapter are essentially over -- at least when it comes to the flagship models (Galaxy S24, Pixel, iPhone).

I guess I will have to grab a Lenovo 65W charger out of my junk box. Still the USB port does charge the phone. Its simply Windows nagging.

My USB-C cable has a LCD showing power but not voltage. I figure with a 130W power brick the machine could handle a phone.

I received my SATA cable so now to find some double sided tape. Maybe I install a 4TB SSD in the machine.

The best you'll do with USB-C on an older notebook like this one is 10-15W -- far less than any flagship phone needs to charge reasonably.

I don't think you'll accomplish that -- the antenna is internal to the assembly, which is glued together. The chances you'll get it apart without breaking the display (or causing heat damage when you try to soften the adhesive) are vanishingly small.

The assembly is under a plastic cover, it is held by 4 screws

Putting the coverer back was more tricky

My XPS 15 9530 has had so many USB-C problems, it makes my head spin.  Even my hearing aid case can not charge on this machine and DELL swept the problem under the rug while it was still under warranty.  Works fine on my Macbook pro so I don't know what has happened to Dell but after being a loyal customer for many decades, I'm afraid this is the last one I'll buy.

I have two Lenovo machines and no issues charging phones at all so my finger points at Dell to fix this issue
