Urgent: Dell XPS 17 9710 Won't Power On Without Plug Despite Full Battery – Need Help Before Upcoming Flight!

I have a Dell XPS 17 9710 that won't power on unless it's plugged in, even though the battery is fully charged and appears to be functioning normally. I need help troubleshooting this issue quickly, as I’ll need to use the laptop unplugged during an upcoming flight. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Run a battery report -- what percentage of the original design capacity remains?

Open a command prompt with admin privilege and type

powercfg /batteryreport

Note:  the "battery health" reference under Windows or in the setup for the firmware does not test the battery charge capacity.

What happens if you unplug the laptop once powered on?

@ECharles  if it is unplugged then it turns off (Goes black) and will not go back on.

@spahnrl sounds as if you need a new battery. Not much you can do now, but either replace it or use an external battery for power.

@spahnrl

The battery has lost close to 50% of its design capacity.  Chances are one ore more of the cells is bad -- meaning the battery can't muster enough voltage to start the system.  You need a new battery.

@ejn63@spahnrl I suspect that the battery has lost far more that the reported amount and, like ejn said, has at least one bad cell.

Please don't fly with that laptop until you replace the battery - it could be a fire hazard.
