Unable to install Windows 11, version 24H2 update
XPS 15 9520
Lapmargin: 0;">Dell XPS 9520
Windows 11 Pro
Version: 23H2
For the past week I have been trying to install the Windows 11, version 24H2 update. Keep getting error messages as follows:
- We could not update the system reserved partition
- Install error: Install error - 0xc1900200
All the following tests were negative:
- sfc /scannow - it found and fixed a couple of items the first time through, and then no errors on subsequent passes
- memtest86 - several passes
- Ran Dell's diagnostics from website and SupportAssistant app - no errors
- suspended antivirus and tried installing but same result.
Appreciate any guidance. Thank you.

The process provided by Microsoft https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsinsider/cleaninstall
The process provided by Dell https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000192698/reset-or-reinstall-windows-11-on-your-dell-computer
The process from Windows 11 clean install tutorial guide https://pureinfotech.com/clean-install-windows-11/ (recommended method due to helpful visual guide)
They are all having the same general processes for a common setup. If you need/want to personalize your preferences, use a downloaded Win 11 ISO and create with Rufus. This will allow you to select any of these options:
* Hardware requirements bypass, for unsupported system.
* Data collection bypass, for privacy preferences.
* Microsoft account requirement bypass, for local account setup.
* Bitlocker bypass. for users control of encryption choices.

The 24H2 is an OS swap upgrade. It would take quite long to perform upgrade. You may consider to do a clean install instead. Afterward, delete the Windows.old empty folder as the downgrade to previous Windows will not be available.

It’s better not to install Dell’s windows 11 update. I did it and my laptop doesn’t work after that. I cannot switch it on. I bought it in 2022, not a big user of laptop. And it’s already died.

I also have a Dell NTB with official Windows 11. The 24H2 update finds itself, but the installation does not complete. Apparently we have to wait for Microsoft to "figure it out" ... (I have two laptops - on one it worked and on the other one it didn't)

Glad to help out. Many users are having the same upgrade issue. Clean install can be quick and giving you a clean slate, up-to-date system.

I found the 24H2 file on the Microsoft site. Use the Windows Assistant to create Media file on a USB flash drive. It took about 1.5 hours to install. I wanted to do an in-placement installation (not clean install). I was advised by Dell tech support that I could only do a clean install but I didn't believe him. The downside is that I'm getting BSOD crashes now. There's probably a driver conflict that wasn't address during the in-place installation. So, I would recommend a clean install as the easiest way to go. I just hate having to reinstall all my apps. (had to do this on Win 10 to 11.)

As I mentioned above I was able to do a clean install of Windows 11 Version 24H2.
However it has been an unmitigated DISASTER since that time. I have used Windows computers for over 40 years but this has been the WORST upgrade ever!!!
I am not going to waste my time enumerating the number of issues I have experienced but the worst is being unable to open my backups!!!
Moral of the story....do NOT install any upgrade until it has been deployed and used for some time to make sure all the bugs are fixed.
Sorry about the long post, I am just frustrated by this whole experience.

It is better now but do not install my dell as the recovery partition it creates will not work if you plan to reset your PC through Support Assist Recovery.
