Replace Dell XPS 17 9710 motherboard with 9730
My XPS 9710 motherboard died a couple of days ago. (2,5 diagnostic lights) Power-rail failure.
For some unknown reason, the 9730 motherboard is cheaper than the 9710. I do see the difference in RAM position but other than that, is there an impediment to replace the 9710 board with the 9730?

The chances of this working hover around zero -- unless you compare every internal component, mounting hold position and internal part, it'll be one big experiment that likely will not succeed. If you really want to do this, look for someone selling a complete base assembly for a 9730 and swap your screen.
Anything else will almost certainly be an exercise in extreme frustration.
