P2725H, no display and PD over USB Type-C Port
I purchased a P2725H monitor for an extended display with my HP EliteBook 840 G5 and MacBook Air.
The monitor specifications indicate it has one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C downstream port with up to 15W power delivery (data only).
Issue:
- When I connected the monitor to my HP EliteBook 840 G5, which has a Thunderbolt 3 port, using a USB Type-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2) to Type-C cable, the monitor was not detected, and no power was delivered. According to the sales team, the monitor supports Thunderbolt 3 and should function as an external display.
- I also connected my MacBook Air to the monitor using the same cable. While the monitor received power, it still failed to detect as an extended screen.
Question/Help:
- Does anyone has face similar issue ?
- Can I connect a USB Type-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2) to Type-C cable to use it for power delivery and as an extended screen?
- Could anyone please share an image of the USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C downstream cable connector?
Note: The USB Type-C cable used is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and supports display alt mode.
Upon consulting with the technical team, I was informed that the monitor does not support a USB Type-C to Type-C connection.
Thanks

The USB-C port does not provide DisplayPort Alt mode and therefore can not be used for monitor display. Here is the ports description for your monitor and its user guide.
• 1 x HDMI 1.4 port (HDCP1.4)*
• 1 x DP 1.2 (HDCP1.4)
• 1 x VGA port
• 1 x Super speed USB 5 Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen1) Type-B upstream port
• 2 x Super speed USB 5 Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen1) Type-A downstream ports
Quick Access
• 1 x Super speed USB 5 Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen1) Type-A downstream port
• 1 x Super speed USB 5 Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen1) Type-C downstream port with charging capability of up to 15 W PD

The power delivery of 15w is very little to support charging of any laptop.

You will need an USB Type C to DisplayPort Adapter or cable

Hi @Chino de Oro,
Appreciate your prompt response.
When I enquired about the same with the Dell sales team executive (don't remember but at least twice) they certainly confirmed that the Type-C port can be used to connect the monitor as an external port. They also confirmed it is compatible to the thunderbolt 3.
So after this confirmation, I had bought this product. Not sure why they had provide me the wrong information.
Below is the snapshot of the transcript with the Dell Sales team executive. Please refer the coloured text.
If needed I can forward the full chat transcript received from dell after the conversation was closed.
Appreciate If you could guide me the next step to address this issue with Dell.
Thanks

As per the sales team executive, they confirmed that I only need USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C to Type-C cable (compatible with thubderbolt3). No other connecter is needed.
And after this confirmation, I had purchased this monitor.

The manual for the monitor states that the USB-C port is downstream only (i.e., output only). It's not going to work as an input (upstream).
See if you can get the port numbered 7 in the manual (the upstream port) to work if you use a USB-C to USB-A cable -- it's not stated as to whether that USB-A port is video enabled, but if the setup is to work, you need to connect the monitor upstream of any source (notebook computer).
I suspect the USB-C port on the monitor is for daisy chaining another monitor to this one.

Alas, the sales team executive was incorrect.
Dell P2725H Monitor User’s Guide Page 53 shows the three options for video input into the P2725H display.
To use the USB Type-C computer output, you will need a cable like the one I suggested.
Dell 27 Inch IPS Display Monitor - P2725H | Dell USA
Note the specifications indicate 1x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C downstream with up to 15W PD (data only)

No, no, do not post any private information on this public forum. When I responded to your question, I provided reference information from technical specifications in User Guide. That also supports your finding when connecting to a laptop, there was no video as expected.
In the transcript, your questions were referred to downstream port with data only. A thunderbolt port can carry video, data, and power. Therefore, the question could be answered as it is compatible with data from a thunderbolt connection. You should have asked if the USB-C on the monitor support video display from a thunderbolt port, then the answer would be different.
Anyway, I only could assist to confirm that your connection with no display is normal behavior as the downstream port can support data transfer from portable drive or USB peripherals. As for pre-purchase questions, if that was a misunderstanding and you are not happy with the purchase, you can choose to return the product while it is still within eligible period.
Then, get a different monitor with USB-C that can support video, data, and power delivery. Otherwise, use HDMI or DisplayPort for video, use USB upstream connection to make use of downstream ports, and use the laptop charger to power the device separately.
For the purpose of this thread topic and for others whom following your thread, you can choose to mark any of my helpful post as accepted answer to your query.
