No audio device installed- even after redownloading driver

I ran into issues with the audio on my XPS 15 9570, where the audio did not play through the speakers. I followed the steps online to uninstall and reinstall the audio driver, however, now my laptop seems to be unable to detect the audio device at all. I've tried reinstalling and rebooting a number of times. When I install the drivers, I get a message that it's an older driver than the one I currently have (which doesn't make sense, given that I'm downloading (1) what appears to be the most recent one on the Dell website, and (2) I don't seem to have a different audio driver).

When I go into the device manager, the driver seems to be showing up under "other drivers" rather than under the audio or sound settings.

External speakers still seem to be working. Any ideas what my issue might be, or what I may be able to try?

I'm not sure what in particular prompted the initial issue. The laptop did crash and restart last night, but audio seemed to be working fine immediately following that (i.e., last night), but not today.

A "No audio device installed" error on a Dell laptop usually indicates a problem with the audio drivers or a disabled audio device. To fix this, you can try updating or reinstalling the audio drivers, ensuring the correct output device is selected, and checking for disabled devices in Device Manager.
Here's a more detailed breakdown of the troubleshooting steps:
1. Check for Disabled Devices and Ensure Correct Output:
Device Manager:
.
Open Device Manager (search for it in the Start menu). Expand "Sound, video and game controllers". Right-click on your audio device (e.g., Realtek High Definition Audio) and select "Enable device" if it's disabled, according to HP support.
Sound Settings:
.
Go to Settings > System > Sound. Under "Output," ensure the correct audio device (speakers or headphones) is selected and set as the default device.
2. Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers:
Dell Support:
.
Go to the Dell Drivers & Downloads page and enter your service tag to find the correct drivers for your model. Download the latest audio driver (usually Realtek).
Device Manager:
.
In Device Manager, right-click your audio device, select "Update driver," then "Search automatically for drivers" or "Browse my computer for drivers" and point it to the downloaded driver file.
Uninstall and Reinstall:
.
If updating doesn't work, try uninstalling the current driver, restarting your computer (which may automatically install a generic driver), and then installing the downloaded driver.
3. Check Windows Audio Services:
Open Services (search for "services.msc" in the Start menu).
Locate "Windows Audio" and "Windows Audio Endpoint Builder" services.
Ensure they are running and set to "Automatic" startup type.
4. Run the Audio Troubleshooter:
Open Settings > System > Sound > Troubleshoot.
Windows will automatically detect and attempt to fix common audio issues.
5. Check for Hardware Issues:
If the problem persists, try connecting external speakers or headphones to see if the issue is with your laptop's internal speakers.
You can also run Dell's SupportAssist tool or diagnostic tests to check the audio hardware.

To receive assistance from Dell chat support, they need to verify the warranty status and ownership. Then you must troubleshoot with them.  Click the "Get Help Now" icon on the right to start a live chat session. If already out of warranty, click here for the Dell out of warranty offering.

Thanks for your response! I appreciate it!

To clarify, I have already followed all of these steps, and the problems are still persisting. Initially, it was an issue where the audio wasn't playing, but I didn't have these message that there were no installed audio devices. After looking online, I followed the steps you outlined in Steps 4, 1, and 2 without being able to resolve the issue.

After reinstalling the driver (RealTek) I found on the Dell website using my laptop's service tag (and restarting my computer), the problems with "No audio device is installed" began. When I download and/or install it, it doesn't appear in the Device Manager, even under the "hidden" items.

In Windows Audio Services, the "Windows Audio" and "Windows Audio Endpoint Builder" are both running and set to automatic.

When I run the troubleshooter it says that there aren't any devices connected.

When I plug in headphones, I still don't get any sound. This means it's a driver issue, rather than a speaker issue, right?
