Motherboard died; can I get my Word and other files off the SSD myself?

XPS 13 9305

XPS 13 9305

Hello!

Background:

I have an XPS 13 9305 that died. LED indicators are 4 white, 2 amber, indicating memory failure.

Per another Dell support thread, I attempted the fix of simply removing the battery and then reinstalling it, but this did not solve the problem. This seems to indicate that I need a new motherboard to fix the problem, as the memory is integrated into the motherboard.

The laptop is no longer under warranty, and the prices I'm seeing to have the motherboard replaced seem to start around $600 with parts and labor.

My question:

If I purchase an enclosure adapter for the M2 PCIe SSD, can I remove the laptop's SSD and access my Word files and copy them to a different computer?

Thank you for your help!

Yes, it is possible to recover your files from the SSD enclosure method.  You may have a problem if the drive was encrypted.  Otherwise, you can access users folders despite warning message about no permission to access.

Thank you!

If I may get one more bit of aid here.  Here is the info from the SSD itself from the laptop --

SN 730 NVMe WDC SSD PCIe Gen 3

SDBPNTY-512G-1012

It's an M.2 2280 (or) M.2 2230, I haven't been able to determine which.

And this is the enclosure adapter I am looking to buy on Amazon:

SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SATA SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVME PCI-E SATA M-Key/(B+M) Key Solid State Drive External Enclosure Support UASP Trim for NVME/SATA SSDs 2242/2260/2280

link:

https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/

This looks like the right product to get, but I'd love if someone could confirm this for me. Again, my goal is to plug this SSD into a desktop to hopefully rescue Word-type files from the SSD.

Thank you!

The enclosure from Amazon link is compatible to be used with your SSD.
