Is it possible to get the DELL-WD19 Docking station 180W working with USB-c 3.0?

Hello,

I have bought DELL-WD19 180W, Which is working fine.
I have:

  • Fujitsu laptop with USB-c 3.1, Windows 10,  which is working fine with the DELL-WD19
  • DELL latitude with USB-c 3.1, Windows 10,  which is working fine with the DELL-WD19
  • Mac Book Pro with USB-c 3.1 which is working fine with the DELL-WD19
  • AND... Asus N580VD with USB-c 3.0, Windows 10, which is not working with the DELL-WD19 Dockingstation!

The Asus N580VD and the MacBook Pro, both should work with this DELL-WD19.

What can I do now? Is the DELL-WD19 130W working with USB-c 3.0 and 3.1?
Or what other opportunity do I have, so that the Mac Book and Asus N580VD can work with the DELL-WD19 180W?

Ok, it's a while ago, BUT...

I've test my laptop a period ago with the DELL D6000 and this one is working everything except that the charging of the laptop, that's not possible. But the network, extend the laptop with extra screens (which isn't working with WD19), connecting peripheries like mobile phone, bike cycling computer etc. is working.

So to exchange between two computers I have to connect two cables instead off one. It's ok.

The model Asus notebook is from 2017.
So that means that DELL-WD19 180W can't be used with this Asus or ...?
Or can I upgrade USB-c 3.0 to USB-c 3.1? (or is this hardware related?)

If that's a 2017 model ASUS notebook, note that very few systems of that age can charge over USB -- that feature became more common in subsequent years (after USB 3.1 was released).

You cannot upgrade the ports in a notebook computer -- you should however check with ASUS about support for USB charging.  The manual for that model is mute on the subject, which is likely because the feature post-dates its release.

It's not just the dock you have, but all USB-C chargers that will end up with the same result.

Ok that is charging but that is not direct my issue. It have bought to add one or two extra screens, but this is not working as wel. The USB-A ports, sound everything is working perfect. If I put dongle of the mouse in my DELL-WD19 the mouse is working like I put the dongle in the laptop.

But my screens doesn't show up anything if I connect this by HDMI port to the DELL-WD19!?
Therefore I believe now I should use the DELL-WD19 130W in stead off 180W. I was expecting the 180W is better and can do everything what the 130W can do!
But the 180W needs USB-c 3.1and can't work with USB-c 3.0 I believe or...?

You need to clean up what you've asked.  It's impossible to tell what's working and what is not.

The docking stations appear identical except for the power supply.  The ASUS system is not going to work correctly with either docking station; the system is too old for that.  Since we don't know what Macbook Pro you're using, it's impossible to advise, but note that those which use Apple CPUs do tend to have more restrictions on external docks/video output than do the Intel-based Macbooks.

But charging is that necessary to get one or two extra screens working via the docking station?

The main reason why I want to use these docking station is to extend my laptop(s) with one or two extra screens! Not for charging my laptop, thats nice to have

Ok, I have now test it with the 130W device version as well:

Power delivery

Dell systems
  • 90 W power capability to Dell systems with 130 W AC-adapter
  • 130 W power capability to Dell systems with 180 W AC-adapter
Non-Dell systems
  • 90 W support for USB Power Delivery 3.0.

But what you  mention ejn63, both docking station versions are not working with my Asus N580VD (2017) with USB-c 3.0.

The laptops I have from my companies are two windows laptops and one Mac Book Pro:
- DELL Latitude 5480, is working with both docking station versions
- Fujitsu Lifebook, which is also working with both docking station versions
- Mac Book Pro 14-inch with Apple M1 pro-chip, , which is also working with both docking station versions

There are three things important for me to use the docking station:
1. Important adding extra screens to my laptops.
2. Important LAN network connection especially for my Mac Book Pro, but this is working
3. If stop working for instance with the Mac, that I can switch to my Asus laptop with only one cable disconnecting, the USB-c docking station connector and connect it to the other laptop

USB Power Delivery is not the most important reason that I want to use this docking station.

See above.  The ASUS system is not going to charge over USB -- it's too old for that.

You need to consult the ASUS documentation as to whether it will support video output over USB 3.0.  Look for a term such as "displaylink over USB".  The system may or may not support it -- but its age suggests the latter.

Sorry that I come back. But I have connected an USB-c screen from my daughter in law to this Asus laptop. And that is working. So my expectation is than that this is also working.

I have last week asked Asus, but thay are saying that it isn't possible to connect an extra screen by USB- c because it delivers to less current. I should buy a docking station via HDMI, that is what they suggest.

Now I write this maybe I understand it.
The extra screen is working via Asus USB-C because the current delivered by the USB-c 3.0 is in that case enough. It was a lucky shot.
But this Asus USB-c delivers to less current to control the DELL-WD19 docking station. That's the clue I think.

Hello,

This the logo besides the interface on my Asus laptop:

Asus USB-c screenshot.jpg

Asus link:

with the text "USB3.2 Gen1 Type-C + Display, with video display function, and theoretical bandwidth with a maximum transfer rate of up to 5Gb/s."

My Asus is the USB-c interface 3.0 in stead of 3.2

And it is possible to connect just one screen directly. I have test it before I bought the DELL-WD19. So therefore I thought this should work. But the DELL-WD19 it's to much I think.

The input to the Dell dock is Thunderbolt -- the output from the ASUS notebook is USB-C.  While the two share a connector, they're not interchangeable.  You have your answer from ASUS.

Is the input of the Dell dock Thunderbolt DELL-WD19 180W? I don't have the DELL-WD19TBS! That's with an Thunderbolt input I suppose.

And my Asus is with "1. USB Type-C with video output function" (USB3.0 Type-C + Display, with video display function....), according to the logo what I have! And I can connect a screen with it, which is working than.

But I suppose the output current of the Asus is to less, to control the WD19 ANS/OR my Asus USB-c 3.0 is to different with the WD19 USB-c 3.1.
Imho. it has nothing todo with Thunderbolt.
