how long does the XPS last?
I purchased my first XPS 17 in 2021 and took delivery of it in early 2022. Since then, I have been completely enamoured of the XPS, to the point I actually bought a second one - partly because my work needs near-constant computer access and I can’t afford to be without a laptop for more than a day or two, but also because I like the system very much. There were some minor teething problems, but I overcame them, and most of my complaints are minor. (I loathe the requirement for a Microsoft account to configure Windows the first time, and the later versions of Microsoft Office are probably just best described as awful; frankly, both the account requirement and the pre-installed office should be removed.)
Here is my question - how long does the XPS last? I’m still using the first machine I’ve got, and there have been some minor issues (mentioned in an earlier post), and I have not had to switch to the second or anything. How much lifespan can I expect? Does not using the second XPS, apart from powering it on every few months to get the updates, keep it from running out of lifespan?
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
On an entirely different note, why has the XPS 17 been discontinued? I’m not very fond of smaller laptop screens and I don’t want to lug around an external monitor if it can be avoided?
Thank you
Chris

With most notebooks, the design life is three years -- it doesn't mean many won't last longer, but the incidence of repair need starts rising markedly at that point.
17" notebooks have never been a large percentage of the market, and with 16" not being physically much larger than 15" systems, they're taken over. Most 17" notebooks were aimed at gaming, and that market is now 18" diagonally.
As manufacturers have dropped 17" screens from most systems, LCD manufacturers no longer make 17" screens in volume, feeding the cycle -- and since something in the 24" range is a basic desktop monitor these days, expect to see 17" systems completely extinct in the near future.
