Horizontal Line Issue on Laptop Screen

Hi ev

Hallo Everyone
I am experiencing an issue with my Dell  XPS 15 7590 laptop screen. A horizontal line has appeared across the display, and it does not go away. I am unsure if this is a hardware or software issue, and I would appreciate any guidance or suggestions to resolve it.

Troubleshooting Horizontal Lines on Dell Laptop

If you are experiencing horizontal lines on your Dell laptop screen, follow these steps to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Run the LCD Built-in Self-Test (BIST):

    • Turn off your laptop.
    • Disconnect any external devices.
    • Restart the laptop and run the LCD BIST to check for hardware issues. This test will display a series of solid colors to help identify screen abnormalities.
  2. Update Graphics Drivers and BIOS:

    • Outdated graphics drivers or incorrect BIOS settings can cause display issues. Use Dell's SupportAssist tool to check for updates:
      • Search for SupportAssist in the Start menu.
      • On the Home tab, select Update software and follow the prompts.
  3. Check for Physical Damage:

    • Inspect the LCD screen for any visible damage, such as cracks or distortions. If damage is found, contact Dell Technical Support for repair options.
  4. Adjust Display Settings:

    • Ensure that the screen resolution and refresh rate are set to the recommended values:
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Display.
      • Adjust the Resolution and Refresh Rate under the Advanced Display settings.
  5. Contact Dell Technical Support:

    • If the issue persists after performing the above steps, reach out to Dell Technical Support for further assistance and potential repair options based on your warranty status.

By following these steps, you can identify whether the issue is related to the hardware or software and take appropriate action.

To receive assistance from Dell chat support, they need to verify the warranty status and ownership. Then you must troubleshoot with them.  Click the "Get Help Now" icon on the right to start a live chat session. If already out of warranty, click here for the Dell out of warranty offering.

Run a screen diagnostics  (hold the D key through powerup).  If the fault shows there, it's hardware and the display assembly needs to be replaced.
