Help - Alert on Service Tag not programmed
XPS 13 9310
Suddenly huge fan noise and Alert on Service Tag not programmed
This is a brand new issue for my laptop XPS 13 9310 dev edition:
When I start my laptop , if I do not do anything, the fan keeps running loudly until the laptop is shutdown.
Important note: in the BIOS I have the screen which shows: "Alert! Service Tag not programmed."
As per screenshot , this is new since : 12-Aug-2024
Only way to prevent this , are the following steps:
- Start up the laptop
- Info: The huge fan noise starts also
- after 4 seconds, I can press "Alt + F" to calm down the fan.
- The BIOS screen shows up, where I click on Continue
- which reboots the laptop
- Info: The huge fan noise restarts again
- after 4 seconds, I can press "Alt + F" to calm down the fan.
- at last it boots to my operating system !
Notes:
- I use my XPS every day.
- No firmware update since 28-Jun (BIOS v 3.23.0)
- No Linux update since 29-Jul (Linux kernel LTS 6.6)
- I used to have a Service Tag in my BIOS (by the way I know my Service Tag, as it is linked to my account)
- I tried to enter my Service Tag in the BIOS : it allows me to enter it , but forgets it somehow. so back to square one.
- During boot time, In the top right corner, I can read in red "8AC6D992".
Do you need more details ?
What are my options please ?

System Management Option Service Tag Input the machine tag Press Enter to confirm. After restarting the machine, it will prompt AIT-F again. You need to press AIT-F again. Note that if you press it too slowly, you need to press it again.

Hi @niko_ke ,
Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.
As per my notes , I already tried to enter my Service Tag in the BIOS : it allows me to enter it , but forgets it somehow. so back to square one.
Any other ideas, by any chance?

@Shopping Chris
If the EEPROM won't retain the service tag, the system board will need to be replaced.
Note that there are two different 9310s -- one standard clamshell, and the other a 2-in-1. The boards are different.

Thanks @ejn63 ,
I think your guess is Service Tag" cannot be saved (or it is saved , but lost later on , or after reboot)
- the "Keyboard Backlight" settings cannot be saved
- the "Battery Configuration" (Power menu) cannot be saved
Funny enough :
- the "Enable Camera" setting can be changed, saved, and kept after reboot.
- Same for the "Display Brightness" setting
- Same for the "Preboot behavior" setting
So....
Is that the kind of behavior that you would expect to see ? Does that confirms the EEPROM fault ?
Many thanks in advance.

The service tag is written to EEPROM -- not the battery backed memory the other settings are saved to.

I have a similar problem on Lattitude 7420. Suddenly my laptop can't turn on after reboot if the charger is connected. Holding power button makes led red. Trying to adjust screen brightness via f2/f3 makes it shut down..
Any idea what this might be caused by?
