Probably need to install 24h2 fresh as earlier setups tended to be messy

@HedgeFundManager thank you, could you let me know a little more?. i don't understand your response. Do you mean i should wait some time before trying to install?. I need to install quick 'ish' as i need to send the laptop back if it can't do this update. However i would really like to keep it. Any additional help in what and how to do it would be perfect.

@ejn63 thank you. the bit i am unsure in i can do is this step-

  1. At the command prompt, type mountvol y: /s and then hit Enter. This will add the Y: drive letter to access the System Partition.

  2. Switch to the Y drive by typing Y: and press Enter. Then, navigate to the Fonts folder by typing cd EFI\Microsoft\Boot\Fonts. Once there, type del *.* to delete font files. The system may ask you if you are sure to continue, press Y and then Enter to continue.

Will this delete my fonts?

will this then work or are there more steps?

I am the GPT option. Or are you from the UK and could you talk me through it?

The process is set to remove about 10 MBs of data.  That may not be enough since some Dell systems stores copies of the bios firmware which, in some cases, fills up that partition.  Below is the process so first check the amount of space available in the Y: partition as I show on my Dell.

If there isn't enough room, you may need to physically change the size of some partitions with a third-party partition manager.  If you are not up for that, you might get a new drive to install with, so you don't wipe your current drive.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>mountvol y: /s

C:\WINDOWS\system32>y:

Y:\>dir
Volume in drive Y is ESP
 Volume Serial Number is 0CA3-1D12

 Directory of Y:\

07/10/2024  09:25 PM    <DIR>          EFI
               0 File(s)              0 bytes
               1 Dir(s)     164,739,072 bytes free

Y:\> cd EFI\Microsoft\Boot\Fonts

Y:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\Fonts>

If there are copies of the firmware, you may be able to delete one of those.

so i deleted the fonts but now bitlocker does not show any texts. users just need to enter their password on a blank screen.  i tried to put the fonts back but theirs no room.  anyone know of any other files the system can live without?

@Tyler Healthix If you look at my post, you see a procedure for placing a volume letter on the EFI system partition.  If you do that and look through the directories, you may find a Dell folder which contains a current and backup copy of your system's firmware updates.

If you do, you should be able to delete the older version.

This is why I always recommend using the Third Party partition manager to increase the size of the EFI system partition to maybe 200 MBs.

What you describe regarding your sign-in is not normal if you followed the Microsoft instructions.  Are the Fonts you deleted still in your recycle bin?

Might be a good time for a new larger SSD as these are bigger and cheaper. I suggest a USB box and a hard disk for backups.
