Erratic Fan and Thermal Issue on Dell XPS 13 9310

Could someone please advise on what is going on.

My Dell XPS 13 9310 has suddenly started exhibiting erratic fan behavior and overheating issues, even when performing light tasks like web browsing. The cooling fans constantly spin up to maximum speed, making a loud noise, then immediately spin down, only to aggressively cycle up again moments later.

When I checked the Dell Power Manager utility, the thermal settings showed:

  • Thermal Profile: Optimized (My usual setting)

  • CPU Temperature: 85°C (While only running 3 Chrome tabs)

  • Fan Speed: Max RPM (Constantly engaging)

This issue only used to occur when I ran heavy tasks like video editing. This time, it began right after a recent BIOS driver update. I've tried resetting the thermal profiles and changing the power plan, but it hasn't resolved the issue.

What's the best approach to fix this? Should I attempt a BIOS downgrade to see if that is the root cause of the aggressive fan cycling, or is there a specific setting in Windows Power Management that needs adjusting?

Thank you. What's the solution?

You can click here for resolving fan and thermal issues on your laptop.
Troubleshooting Loud and Erratic Fan Issues

If you are experiencing a loud and erratic fan on your Dell laptop, consider the following steps to resolve the issue:

  1. Check for Dust Accumulation: Ensure that the air vents are not blocked by dust or debris. Clean the vents carefully to improve airflow.
  2. Update BIOS and Drivers: Make sure your BIOS and system drivers are up to date. Visit the Dell support website to download the latest versions.
  3. Monitor System Temperature: Use software tools to check the internal temperature of your laptop. High temperatures can cause the fan to run excessively.
  4. Adjust Power Settings: Change your power settings to a balanced or power-saving mode to reduce fan activity during less intensive tasks.
  5. Run Diagnostics: Use Dell's built-in diagnostic tools to check for hardware issues related to the fan or thermal management.
  6. Check for Background Processes: Ensure that no unnecessary applications are running in the background, which could cause the CPU to overheat and the fan to work harder.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, consider contacting Dell support for further assistance.
