Dell XPS Laptops

Hello..

For decades I have always owned Dell computers or laptops. I bought two XPS 15 laptops Oct 2022.

One now has lines going through the screen and the other just started (yesterday) with the screen being totally black with voices/audio in the background.

Since they are 4 months out of warranty, my question is with the black screen. I have tried doing a hard restart, a couple times. I also tried unplugging and doing a "control/delete/alt/B" graphics thing (that I read with a google search).

Not going to bash Dell but they do not seem to be the same as a couple decades ago.

Can someone give advice on why the screen won't come up?

Thank you in advance

Screen going black could be the backlight failing (unlikely) or the power supply to the backlight failing (far more likely).  It could also be a failing GPU.

Is there even a faint image on the screen?  Use a bright flashlight to check.

Run a full screen diagnostic (hold down the D key through powerup).  Does the screen show the test patterns at full brightness?

The other test to try if you have an external monitor is to see whether there's an image on an external screen when the internal one goes black.

Hello and thank you for the detailed response. I will give these a try to see if they will work. I am not 100% computer literate (even with 30 years experience lol).

I don't have an external monitor but it would be interesting to see if it would show up there and not on the laptop screen.

The screen is completely dark and one time there was a horizonal "blip" of a line or two.

Thank you very much again!
