Dell XPS 9720 battery discharging while plugged in

Hi,

Is this normal? Brand new top spec XPS 17 will slowly discharge while connected to the 130w charger.

I am seeing 2w to 8w of discharge under load!

Thanks.

That sounds normal if the system is under high load. I believe that model uses Hybrid Power. When under heavy load with CPU-intensive and GPU-intensive tasks such as video editing or gaming, the laptop draws power concurrently from both AC adapter and battery. When the battery charge falls below 10%, Hybrid Power is disabled, and system performance will drop.

If the battery is removed to run on AC alone, or when running on only battery, then in those situations the performance would be reduced.

It's not normal. It was a huge problem with the first XPS 17 laptops (9700). I'm not surprised that Dell still has this problem.

It's not normal for a battery to discharge while the device is plugged in and connected to a power source. This indicates an issue with either the battery or the charging system. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

  1. Update Drivers: Make sure that all of your device drivers, including the battery driver, are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from the Dell website.

  2. Check Battery Health: Use the built-in battery health monitoring tool to check the status of your battery. If the tool shows that the battery is not holding a charge, it may need to be replaced.

  3. Check Charger: Make sure that the charger you are using is compatible with your device and is working properly. You can try using a different charger to see if it resolves the issue.

  4. Disable Power-Hungry Features: Features like high-resolution displays, demanding applications, and advanced graphics can consume a lot of power. Try disabling these features to see if they are contributing to the battery drain.

  5. Perform a System Reset: If the above steps don't resolve the issue, you may need to perform a system reset. This will erase all personal data and restore the device to its original state.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may need to bring your device to a repair center for further diagnosis and repair. It's also a good idea to check your device's warranty status, as the battery issue may be covered under warranty.

Turns out this is normal/design flaw.

Item was replaced and replacement has the same issue. Basically the 130w power supply is not sufficient. No way exists to provide more than 130w, even two chargers does not help.
