Dell XPS 17 9710 Persistent Screen Dimming Issue – Half Screen Appears Dim

I've been using my laptop for over three years now. Recently, I started experiencing an issue where the right half of the screen appears dimmed, with a noticeable gradient transition around the middle. The first time this happened was about five months ago, but restarting the laptop a few times seemed to temporarily resolve it.

However, the problem has since become consistent—every time I power on the laptop, half of the screen is dimmed. Occasionally, after using it for an hour or so, the screen returns to normal on its own, but the issue reappears during the next session.

At first, I assumed it was a hardware issue—possibly with the display or backlight. But the fact that it occasionally fixes itself at random makes me wonder if it could instead be software- or system-related. I’ve tried restarting the system multiple times and adjusted various power and graphics settings, but nothing has resolved the problem permanently.

Any insights or suggestions on how to diagnose or resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

Run a screen diagnostic -- if the same problem does not show up, it could be software (hold the D key through powerup to initiate).

If the same fault does show on the diagnostic screens, it's almost certain the screen is failing.  Either the backlight strip is failing, or if it's an OLED screen, the screen itself is failing.  Either way, you'll need a new display assembly to solve the problem.

It is not uncommon for an LED backlight to flicker or fail intermittently before it totally fails.  There may also be more than on LED strip inside, which is why it's only a partial screen blackout.

Hi, thanks for the suggestions.
I’ve run the diagnostics, and unfortunately, the issue still persists. The screen is an OLED panel. I was hoping it might be a system-related problem, but it seems I’ll need to bring it in and have it checked out.

Thanks again for the help.
