Dell XPS 15 9500 – Windows 11 cannot install on new NVMe SSD Samsung Evo 2 TB (EFI / partition error, SSD disappears)

Dell XPS 15 9500 – Windows 11 cannot install on new NVMe SSD (EFI / partition error, SSD disappears

Body:

Hello Dell Community,

I’m facing a very persistent issue installing Windows on a new NVMe SSD on my Dell XPS 15 9500, and I’d appreciate guidance from Dell support or users who experienced the same problem.

Device:

- Model: Dell XPS 15 9500

- BIOS: Latest available (updated)

- OS trying to install: Windows 11 (UEFI)

SSD Details:

- New NVMe Samsung Evo 990 SSD Gen 4 (2 TB)

- Installed in the primary NVMe slot (same slot where the original SSD worked)

- Original SSD installs Windows normally using the same USB installer

Problem description:

- When trying to install Windows on the new SSD:

- Windows Setup shows the SSD initially

- After clicking “Next”, I receive an error saying:

“There is an error selecting this partition for install. Please select a different partition.”

- If I press “Refresh”, the SSD sometimes disappears completely from the installer

Important note:

The SAME Windows USB works perfectly if I reinstall Windows on the OLD SSD.

Steps Already Tried:

1. Disk completely wiped using DiskPart:

   - clean

   - convert gpt

   - SSD shows as unallocated space

2. BIOS settings tested and confirmed:

   - Boot Mode: UEFI

   - SATA Operation: AHCI

   - Secure Boot: tested OFF, Audit Mode, and Deployed Mode

   - UEFI Boot Path Security: set to Never

   - TPM 2.0 / Intel PTT: Enabled

   - SED Block SID Authentication: Disabled

   - RAID: Disabled

   - Old SSD removed during installation attempt

3. Windows Installer:

   - Booted explicitly as “UEFI: USB”

   - Same installer works with the old SSD

Observations:

- The new SSD is detected in BIOS

- The SSD can disappear in Windows Setup after refresh

- This strongly suggests a storage controller / driver / firmware issue rather than a USB or partition issue

Any official Dell guidance or confirmed solution would be greatly appreciated, as this issue persists despite correct BIOS configuration and a clean GPT disk.

Thank you.

Hi

Dunno.

I had a problem with a 2TB NVMe not being "suitable" for W11.

Installed Linux Mint in a matter of minutes without a hitch.

Then, Lo and Behold a Miracle, W11 installed without a problem overwriting the Linux Mint install, and after that I have re-installed both OS's faultlessly.

The fix??? Dunno.
