XPS 15 9500, WD19S, 2x U2719D 2560x1440

Hi, 

I have bough XPS 15 9500 (Intel i9). I want to use WD19S docking station to connect 2 U2719D (2560x1440). I only want to use the 2 monitors. The laptop built in LCD will be off. Monitors are plugged in by DisplayPort directly to WD19S. I bought the WD19S to be able to plug in jus a single cable to my laptop. The problem is that only 1 of the monitors gets the native resolution (2560x1440). The second one gets 2048x1080 which is not acceptable. How to solve that issue? I require 2 monitors.

@WW22KK  The XPS 15 9500 is a DisplayPort HBR2 system, not an HBR3 system.  As indicated in the WD19S User Guide, when paired with a DisplayPort HBR2 system, your dual display maximum is 1920x1080 (technically 1920x1200, but Dell doesn't seem to account for that resolution anymore).  You don't have enough bandwidth to run dual 2560x1440 from that system through that dock.  So you have two options:

  • Connect one of the displays directly to your system using a USB-C to DP cable/adapter so that its bandwidth requirements don't have to be met over the dock connection.

  • Get a WD19TBS, which when paired with your system will be able to tap into 4x more video bandwidth than the regular WD19S and could therefore run dual displays up to 4K 60 Hz each or triple displays up to 2560x1440 each -- although the latter would require disabling the built-in display to stay within the GPU's triple display max, which applies regardless of resolution or how they're connected.

@WW22KK  You're welcome.  The WD19S is available in two versions.  One comes with a 130W power source and can provide up to 90W to the attached system.  The other comes with a 180W power source and can provide up to 130W to the attached system.  (The reason is that the dock has to reserve some power to run its own electronics and power any USB peripherals you plug into it.)  The XPS 15 9500 is designed for 90W if it does NOT have an NVIDIA GPU, or 130W if it does.  So if you have an NVIDIA GPU and got the WD19S 130W instead of the WD19S 180W, then you'll see that power supply warning.  The WD19TBS is only available as 180W with up to 130W passed through to the system.

OK. Thank you for the answer. 

I have also noticed, that the system gives me information that charging is slow, and BIOS, tells me that the dock does not provide enough power. Is it because WD19S has not enough power ? Will W19TBS solve it ?

So it seems that the solution to my both problems is replacing 19S with TDP. Thank you for detailed explanation. I was not aware that so many details matter in this case.

What is the difference between 19TB and 19TBS ? Is it TB going to be suitable for needs above ( monitors + power supply) ?

@WW22KK  The WD19TB was released first.  It has since been replaced by the WD19TBS, just like the WD19 was replaced with the WD19S.  The "S" models do not have the 3.5 mm headset jack that existed on the original non-S versions of the WD19 dock family models.  Apparently the global semiconductor shortage affected those jacks or the audio chipset that runs them, which was preventing Dell from manufacturing docks, so they worked around it by creating versions of their docks that didn't have that connector.  Other than that, they're identical.
