Dell 15 7590 Smart wear level

Hi,

Is a SMART Wear Level Test result D0402 on my Dell 15 7590 bad?

I am using this computer as my main now, as my Dell 17 is not working at the moment. I’ve had this computer for much longer, since May 2020.

This is a XPS by the way.

It works well at the moment, and the sound is really good and loud.

I think I may have put it through a lot though, as I went through a lot of stress and trauma with it. Hence, the wear level for hard drive.

I thought I might as well just open this thread too, even though I am prioritising  with Dell 17, and need this relevant thread specific to Dell 15 issue. As also, I am very self conscious of Dell 15, as it’s right in front of me right now and I am using it.

Should I run F12 hardware diagnostic? Or CrystalDisk?

My warranty expired a long time ago, yet Iater down the road (as I’m dealing with a lot of trauma with Dell 17 and non-related computer issues right now), I can pay in full onsite after purchasing a new HDD/SSD from the official Dell store (once I figure out correct one), and for them to put it in. I can show my tax invoice, which includes my service tag. I could also contact the same local repairman again, as I also talked about this issue casually to him.

I then can just keep the old HDD/SDD around.

I had already backed up my files in advance, yet since I can open this computer, I might just see if all the file thumbnails on my Dell 15 are on my same Seagate drive, yet under a different folder specifically for Dell 15.

I’m also worried about licensing there, even though I bought it from Dell official store, and same with Dell 17.

For Dell 15, I turned my computer to Windows 10 Pro from Home to enrol in ESU, as I don’t want Windows 11 on this computer Dell 15, and after deleting a manual registry entry, I installed In Control.

That was even more important for me, in terms of updates, as the pause for seven days and pause limit was always grayed out, and contributed greatly to my stress and anxiety.

I had thought just turning off internet WiFi completely from Dell 15 would be okay with it not causing me anxiety, as I may just use it sometimes as Dell 17 became my main computer, yet now I need to turn on internet for it.

What is the numerical value for the SSD wear level?

Anything between 50 and 100% is normal.

Below that, you should keep an eye on it and consider replacing the drive.

A quick google search of the D0402 and you're looking at a possible predictive failure. Meaning the SSD may soon be in a state where you can no longer boot to Windows or recover data from it. I would recommend running the diagnostics to ensure that is the case:

  1. Shutdown the unit
  2. Hold down the Fn key and the power button together
  3. The quick test should automatically start
  4. Make note of any error and validation code

If you receive error codes 2000-0142 or 0151, then you would indeed want to replace the SSD. If the diagnostic passes, then it would still be best to go off of the SMART error that was received. Feel free to refer to this article for a full list of failures from our diagnostic as needed.

I was able to confirm that your XPS 7590 has shipped with a 1 TB 2280 NVMe SSD. This would be the preferred storage type to use again for the best performance. The storage size can be up to you depending on how much you want to spend. That said, I would recommending getting at least a 256GB drive so that you at least have some storage to get by. Feel free to contact Dell Support for an out of warranty quote to be created. They should be able to quote the SSD replacement along with an onsite tech to perform the task. Alternatively, you can go 3rd party for repairs as well.

Needless to say, you will need to reinstall Windows if the SSD is replaced. Now the licensing question is a bit more unknown as you upgraded to W10 pro. The motherboard holds the activation key for the original version of Windows. So you can certainly reinstall Windows with our OS recovery tool and get the Home version activated.  However, I am not certain if it will also activate Pro. That activation key should be tied to your Microsoft Account.

I ran CrystalDisk. The SSD wear number is 98%.

Please let me know if the Total Host Writes and Power On Count / Hours is okay.

I ran Preboot Diagnostics too. The only error was ‘unable to detect charger’ and to please connect it, which I did, and that warning disappeared. It said the mouse would not be on during the test.

Decimal reading, CrystalDisk.

I had a feeling Hibernation mode in my default Dell power plan was one of the reasons for the wear error. I had it set to hibernate after changing the number from 30 - 60 min (out of the box) to a few varying numbers like 90 min and 120 min.

I went into the Balanced power plan today, fixing the Hibernation issue, as I saw the default minutes was a long value, spanning in hours to be 23 - 24 days (a month). I also saw the other options and did different numbers in that plan to what I preferred.

My laptop should no longer Hibernate, like it’s been doing since I got it in 2020. I remember I tried to fix the Hibernate issue then, early on in 2020, yet that power plan did not understand it. I did a long value, and I think the screen went black, the next day, or there was an error. I think that Dell plan just thinks that’s not regulated with the device. Balanced is more customisable.

I know people do figure out and use Sleep, not Hibernate, daily with that model.

So I hope it works with Balanced, henceforth. I’ll shut down and restart, so the machine remembers.
