BIOS goes to black screen, after resizing partitions, ADMIN and BIOS passwords enabled

Hi everyone,

Not a complete newbie here, but I have ran out of ideas/options to sort on my own.

XPS 13 (2 in 1, 7390), the main problem here is that the SDD is soldered.

I had a working system, I have both Administrator (to enter the system) and BIOS passwords activated.

The system was setup as dual boot Win10/Ubuntu, I performed a shrink on the the Win partition, it showed as successfully completed in Ubuntu. I restarted my system, it prompted as it would with the Administrator password, and boom. It did not show the usual "headless operation active" warning, the screen was just black (but with light, not off).

I changed nothing else (now that I think I should have adjusted the EFI/GPT) settings after shrinking, anyway. This fault to me was triggered by nothing else than a confused BIOS looking at the ssd (soldered) and not matching the old setup.

I know this should not have been a huge issue, boot from a live USB, fix GPT/EFI bootloader/GRUB, etc... the usual annoying stuff.

So I tried to enable single boot with F12 to choose my USB, it promts me with my Administrator password, I enter it correctly and... Oh "%45&#¤ it goes to the same blank screen. I tried many times, same result. So I try to go to the BIOS F2, same prompts for Admin password upon reboot (with ctrl-alt-del) same, blank screen.

I thought it was the BIOS, so went to BIOS recovery through the ctr-esc combo, it enters to the menu, I tried fix with my current configuration, it prompts for my admin password, I enter it, it continues to complete the process, reboot... same blank screen after password promt. Then I tried reset to factory settings (which I wanted to avoid due to activating FastBoot and other stuff I did not want to touch), the process goes well too, but same blank screen, both to boot and to boot meny and bios settings.

At this point I think the ssd is causing the issue, or maybe it is toasted and it's some of the first devices the bios checks, if it failed, the bios stops there(???). But it was working in Ubuntu, and I used for some minutes before rebooting, so I think is not completely toasted.

I tried with some hope to use external monitor, thinking it may have been displaying the bios screen off my main display, nope.

Having reset the bios to the factory settings means it will likely (I can't remember) allow me to boot from USB devices before Windows, which is why I wanted to avoid resetting to factory. But I do want to try removing the password screen, so that it probably boots to the USB.

The issue is I cannot dissable my password because I cannot get to the bios!!! and I cannot access my live USB because the delay caused by the password prompt messes up this (I think).

The questions:

- If I get a password reset code from Dell service (got ownership proof, etc), will it remove it for good, or will it only unluck the bios so I can enter and change it? if it is the later, I am fried.

- Is this model (7390) equipped with the CMOS password jumper pins? I can't find this info for some reason. If so, I will appreciate if  someone can help me with a link to the manual/procedure.

Other than that, I think I have no more options. The worst part is that I was shrinking the partitions to get them to smaller .img/.raw wihout having to compress them. I do have a full backup of the data, but my main pain is that I have software that is linked to this device, and transfer that to a new one will be a total pain due to licensing limitations, etc.

Any ideas welcome! But I guess I don't have many options, other than making a custom bios that blacklists my ssd and defaults to boot from an external USB device. By the way, due to this precise issue of having a soldered ssd, Dell should provide a similar rescue tool. Many users can experience this, and there is no "easy" or even difficult, way to sort it. To me, this seems almost impossible to do at this moment, without resetting my password then my bios boot order.

All other devices, keyboad, backlight controls, external monitor key, screen brightness, touchpad, work as usual.

MANY THANKS!!!! I will really appreaciate some advanced help here. My PhD work is in this laptop and it means a lot to get things rolling as quick as possible.

Sorry for the possible typos and poor grammar, I'm quite tired as of now.

The system password should not be an issue, but the change to the location of the EFI partition will be.  Will the system boot to an externally bootable, Windows 10 flash drive (preferably made with the MS Media Creation tool)?  You'll need that whether you're looking to try repairing the existing boot loader, or simply wiping the drive and reloading the OS from bare metal.

@ejn63  Hi, and thanks for the prompt response! I have a bootable Windows USB I can use, the problem is that the system does not enter the boot options menu, I enter my password and it would normally then show me the options, instead, it goes to a blank screen. Just to clarify, because I did not especify that I only shrank the c:\ and d:\ (containing only info) partitions, I did not, at least intentionally, touch the EFI partition or any boot, recovery or other reserved ones.

At this point I am using a ventoy loaded with some images, I will give it a go to the Win bootable one, maybe it boots to that.

@breakingstuff OK, I gave it a go with the Windows recovery tool USB I had, no luck. I can see the key led blinking on power on and after entering my password, but the black (lit) screen still there.
