Are Hard Drive Covers Essential?
Dear all,
I hope this question is valid enough to be posted on here: in regards to installing a new hard drive into a DELL XPS 15 7590, is it essential to also install the hard drive (rubber) covers during the process?
I ask this question, as the hard drive that I have installed is a bit too big for the covers to fit, so without the covers, the HDD fits fine along with the metal cage.
I hope there aren’t any potential risks associated with removing the covers and keeping the HDD in the laptop as it is. Please let me know - it would greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

@d5123101 is spot on, those are used for vibration dampening. It will not cause a problem if you do not use them on the new drive. None of my Dell laptops ever had them and there was no excessive vibration noticed.

As JOcean and d5123101 noted, those are to insulate against vibration from a spinning hard drive. I've never seen them in use on any laptops that I've opened, but I'm aware of them.
Just in case you haven't considered this:
If you have only a single drive in your laptop, have you considered replacing it with an SSD rather than another hard drive? Replacing it with an SSD will make it much faster and more responsive, a noticeable difference and the most bang-for-your-buck that you can get for any upgrade.

I'd need to see some pictures to know exactly what you are talking about. However, sometimes that rubber is acting as a shock absorber/vibration damper which is especially important if what you installed is a traditional spinning platter HDD.

Hi,
The first picture is a screenshot of the HDD covers encapsulating the opposing sides of the hard drive, (which should happen, though in my case, the rubber covers fail to fit).
The second picture shows the rubber covers I have with me for the hard drive.
Thank you.

Hi, I am glad to know that it won't cause a potential issue in the future, but while I installed the new drive, I have been trying ever so hard to fit those rubber covers, alas I have only encapsulated it in the hard drive metal cage, and it looked quite snug in it, so I presumed all was well. As of yet, I have had no problems with anything regarding the new drive installation, so all in all, I am glad to clarify this issue with you all.
Thank you all very much, and I highly appreciate it! Now, I can continue as normal knowing my hard drive is not at a potential risk of experiencing damping in such an oscillatory system such as this...
