xps8700 sata drive error

XPS 8700

XPS 8700

My system tray reports a disk error on boot up which is presumably the error below. The PC boots up and operates fine. I did a little searching on the forum and possibly its arisen as a result of an upgrade to Windows 10 Home? Just wondering if its something I should be concerned about. Thanks in advance for any help/advice received.

You can use Check Disk option to detect and correct disk errors.

The error is because 8700 factory setup is to have a small 30GB msata ssd along with a hdd as intel rapid storage setup. The msata serves as a cache drive.  Now after you installed your own 2.5” sata ssd, that original setup is disrupted.  You can just open up your 8700 and uninstall the msata.  Refer to p.33/86 of manual https://dl.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_xps_desktop/xps-8700_owner's%20manual_en-us.pdf#page33

details: Dell original factory set up is previously had a RAID 0 boot configuration with a small 28gb/30GB msata sdd and 1tb/2TB hdd as intel RST (Dell did this in xps 8700/8500).  When you switch to your own 2.5” 500GB sata ssd as boot drive or system drive, remove the msata, and change sata operation from RAID to AHCI.  Do a fresh clean install of Win 10 on new ssd. You do not need the intel RST.

@redxps630 many thanks for your advice. I'm comfortable removing the msata as advised but would benefit from a little more hand-holding with the RAID to AHCI malarky. My W10H is already installed on the c drive and is working fine. If it's necessary to make some adjustment after removing the msata whilst keeping the current W10H install, can you outline them for me please in steps I can follow.

you can do this:

  1. Run cmd as administrator

  2. Copy-paste this command, which will start Windows in Safe Mode the next time you reboot:

    bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal
  3. Restart the computer and enter UEFI/BIOS setup.

  4. Change the SATA operation mode from RAID to AHCI.

  5. Save changes and exit Setup and Windows will automatically boot to Safe Mode.

  6. Launch cmd again, as in step #1.

  7. Copy-paste this command, which will start Windows in Normal Mode the next time you reboot:

    bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot
  8. Reboot and Windows will automatically start with AHCI drivers enabled.

Many thanks !!! Last question I hope .... Should I do this before or after removing the msata or doesn't it really matter?
