XPS 8960, USB-C, DisplayPort connectivity issues
My monitor will not connect through the display port. I am using a cable that is USB type C to the monitor and USB D to the computer. My Graphic card does not have a USB C type port (Only D). This is a brand new computer. Do I need to buy a different computer so that it is compatible with my monitor?
Thanks Craig

If this is a desktop system, note that desktops almost universally do not output video over USB at all. What model system do you have?

Re: My Graphic card does not have a USB C type port (Only D).
does your video card have HDMI, and is that what you mean by D?
like the 1st port on the left side in this pic
If yes, that is not a USB port but a video port.

Re: My monitor will not connect through the display port.
assuming your monitor has no DP port (such as the three ports on the right side of pic above), does your monitor have HDMI port (which you might call "USB D")? if yes, get a straight HDMI to HDMI cable btn pc and monitor.

yes mine looks just like yours. I have my monitor connected through HDMI now and it works. But don’t advertised the monitor as connecting with a USB-C cable and you wouldn’t need to plug the monitor in. Just run USB C to the computer. They even supplied the cord and have picture of it on their website for the 34” curved monitor

If there's a video-capable USB-C port on the monitor, it's for connecting a notebook. Notebooks commonly have USB-C video out.
Desktop systems do not. There are ways to add it (displaylink adapters) but desktop systems rarely have USB-C video out.

modern monitor such as 34" curved monitor advertised as connecting with USB C is meant for modern high end laptop which are getting rid of HDMI and favoring all USB C video ports, such as Dell precision laptop.
the desktop tower discrete video card are so far sticking to mainly Display Port with one HDMI.

@ejn63 okay thanks. Do you know what all display ports are for on the graphic card?

It is for connecting to multiple monitors (up to three) with DP in port.

That’s what I thought so why can’t I connect my brand new Dell monitor using the DP port? I can only use the HDMI?

you can if your new monitor has DP port. just use a DP-DP cable.

You purchased the S3423DWC AMD FreeSync USB-C monitor which has the following video IN ports =
HDMI #2.0 #1
HDMI #2.0 #2
USB-C
Correct. It only ships with the USB-C to USB-C video cable.
The online XPS 8960 Setup and Specifications PDF page 19 shows that both the front and rear USB-C ports do not support video =
Your XPS 8960 shipped with the following discrete video card with four video OUT ports =
HPPKD MSI Nvidia RTX 4070, two fans (DP 1.4/DP 1.4/DP 1.4/HDMI 2.1)
Why can’t I connect my brand new Dell monitor using the DP port? I can only use the HDMI?
* Going from the video card DP out ports to the S3423DWC USB-C in port is a non-supported "UP" conversion.
* You could "DOWN" convert from the video card DP out port to the S3423DWC HDMI in port.
