XPS 8960, P2719H freezes after not being used for a while

When my 6-week old XPS 8960 desktop has not been used for a while, when I go back to using it I find that the screen is frozen for several seconds. By 'frozen' I mean that it does not respond to mouse or keyboard input for 5 - 10 seconds. After that, everything works perfectly.

When I say that my PC "has not been used for a while," I can't pinpoint the exact amount of time that I have not been using my PC, but it has been as little as 20 minutes.

Before I start working through my standard list of troubleshooting techniques: Does anyone out there recognize what might be happening to my computer, and suggest a solution?

I actually found the solution to this problem. The complete (11 page) discussion is here: Very Minor Desktop Icon Issue

It's actually a problem for Windows 11, which continues to open a frame-less window for widgets, even if you have disabled widgets. The window closes on its own after a few seconds, but while it is open, the window has focus, so users are unable to click on the desktop underneath.

The solution in my case was to disable widgets in group policy. In any case, this is not a Dell issue.

If I had to guess then it may be a problem with the HDD/SSD. If it is an HDD boot drive it may not be coming back to full speed quickly and would seem to indicate a drive problem. Try running diagnostics, F12 immediately at boot, and watch for any driver errors.

@Bulldog Thanks for that as other users may find the same problem and you post will help! I can hardly wait for Windows 12 next year (sarcasm mode enabled).

My issue is that I come back to the PC after leaving it and the PC cannot be reawakened using the mouse or the keyboard.  I have even tried using a USB connected mouse but still no joy.  If I press the power buttom momentarily I see the log on screen but still the mouse doesn't allow me to activate the screen so I can enter my Pin number to log on.  The only remedy is to force power off.  I then get the screen that informs me that the operating system hasn't loaded correctly and I then select option to restart PC.  This has now happened several times and twice in last 48 hours.  Any suggestions would be appreciate.

@Lewiscr2024  - Also an XPS 8960?

Sounds like a Windows Power plan settings issue:

  1. Expand list under USB in Device Manager
  2. Double-click each USB entry and look for a Power Management tab
  3. Uncheck the box "Allow PC to turn off..." on that tab
Make sure "Allow to wake..." is checked on that tab
Not every USB will have one/both those boxes, and/or they may be grayed out
  4. Repeat for all USB entries with Power Management tab
  5. Now do same for all Human Interface Devices with Power Management tab in Device Manager
  6. Exit Device Manager when done
  7. Open Windows Power/Sleep screen
  8. Identify active Power plan and navigate to its Advanced settings screen
  9. At the top, set to High Performance
  10. Disable Hybrid Sleep, USB Selective Suspend, and PCI-e Link State Management
  11. Save the changes to power plan and reboot
  12. Check waking by USB mouse and keyboard...
