XPS 8960, DP to dual HDMI splitter not working
Has anyone gotten a DP to dual HDMI splitter to work with an XPS 8960?
I tried this Monoprice splitter, but it caused the machine to hang up when trying to boot or wake up from sleep.

From what I gather, and my experience over the past month, @redxps630 is correct - Displayport splitters are not a robust technology. Nevertheless, I've gotten one to work on the XPS 8960, it doesn't blank the monitors (yet), and it does everything I need. See details here.
A bonus is that without a graphics card the system draws less than 5 watts in Sleep as well as Hiber. So I use Sleep for fast wakeup during the day, but set it to go into Hiber at night in order to wake up and run programmed tasks because they can't wake it up from Sleep. Full explanation and details here.

using splitter is not good idea. if you have two HDMI monitors and must use two HDMI video cables, find a video card that has HDMI and DVI. do not use DP to HDMI adapter which is prone to issue. DVI and HDMI are natively compatible so you can easily use a DVI to HDMI cable to connect a video card DVI port to a HDMI monitor.
You will find it hard to find a video card that has two HDMI ports. mainly because card designer want to make the card appeal to a wide variety of people so typically a card has one HDMI one DVI and one or more DP.

the GTX 645 is still faster than the UHD 770 of 8960

I have an old video card that was doing the job, but it had some glitches and causes excess power usage in sleep state as well as when the machine is operating.
I did find a splitter that works well so far. Are there any specific issues, or are they just prone to failure? I don't need video for gaming, just for general use.

it is hit and miss and I do not recommend experiment with those. It could be a quality component issue. even if it works now no promise of future. it is like those apps on Apple store all say can do the same thing but 80-90% have problem.

@redxps630 Do you think a DP to dual DP will work any better than the DP to dual HDMI? One of my monitors takes DP, and I could put Dell's DP to HDMI adapter on the other DP output to drive the monitor that only has HDMI.
The DP to dual HDMI I recommended blanks out my monitor for 2 to 5 seconds a couple of times a day. Otherwise it's fine, although I'm not using it for video or gaming.
I would really like to avoid using my video card. It bumps up the power draw, even in hibernation.

The best single DP to drive two monitors is daisy chain but that requires one monitor to have DP in + DP out.
I think you can find a simple low power video card that draws <25W such as GT730 and provides HDMI.

@redxps630 I have an MSI GeForce GT 710 with the same ports. I guess I'll put it back in and see if it looks better to me, now that I've been disappointed by several splitters.

Do you have the latest Intel Graphics driver installed?
Do these monitors have their own drivers and did you install both of them?
Any errors reported in Event Viewer around the time the monitors go blank?
Next time screen goes blank, try pressing Win+Ctrl+Shift+B and see if that gets things working again.

@RoHe Thanks for your reply.
The latest Intel U770 graphics driver is installed, as is the latest driver for the Dell G2724D which is the monitor that goes blank.
I am downloading the driver for the Samsung S32F351 Monitor. I'll install it, and check the Event Viewer if the problem recurs.
The monitor unblanks in 2 to 5 seconds, so Win-Ctrl-Shift-B is unnecessary.

Did you check in Event Viewer to see if there are any errors around time the monitor goes blank?
Could this be a Power plan settings issue? Navigate to the Windows Advanced Power settings screen by clicking: Start>Run>%windir%\System32\control.exe powercfg.cpl,,1 and click OK. (Yes, there are 2 commas after .cpl before the 1.)
On Advanced screen:
Disable PCI Express Link State Management
Select higher settings for both Max and Min Processor States
Disable Hybrid Sleep
Change Intel Graphics Power Plan to Max Performance
Increase time or disable: Turn off display after...
Save the Power plan changes and reboot PC
If that solves the problem, you can work backwards by reverting these items to their original setting, one at a time, if you want to see which one(s), if any, causes the problem.
